1394520 2015-02-16 20:54:00 I am looking to get one or two 6TB hard drives.

They are still very exe in NZ eg $430 (from 2 NZ suppliers) versus $269 in the USA from new egg. (not sure about shipping.) (customs etc)

But that is a big difference.

My question is what about freight handling and damage etc.

Exactly.
You need to check their freight costs, some are good, some awful.
Damage? You'd find that a major hassle most likely if something happened to it on the way.

And check customs, if theres any duty that may be put on it.

1394522 2015-02-17 00:39:00 Is that the WD RED advertised @ $269USA (just found it on newEgg on special Normal Price $299 USA ) so with the exchange rate you are looking roughly give or take a bit $340 NZ + customs +GST so it wont be much cheaper than from a NZ supplier. (depending on the Supplier).

Also not to sure how a warranty will go if it fails within the time allowed.

Lots of people got stung online shopping overseas at Xmas, thought it was cheaper, but by the time customs did their thing some worked out more expensive. :2cents:

Yes it is that one.
Of course you take a punt on the customs and GST.

If the total comes to less that NZ$400 you won't get charged any customs and GST. If newEgg shipping is too expensive you could try YouShop..

Thats actually not quite correct -- Check the Custom Laws for importing.

Q.I thought I could bring in up to $400 worth of goods tax-free?

A.There is a common misconception that goods purchased online from overseas websites for less than NZ$400 can come into the country (be imported) without incurring any duty, GST, or charges. This ‘rule of thumb’ does not apply to goods that attract both duty and GST, such as clothing, shoes, and accessories. Customs charges maybe payable when the value of these goods exceeds approximately NZ$225.

Just recently I had to get a HDD replaced by Western Digital, I had to prove it was a warranty replacement other wise it would have incurred additional fees so I was told.

1394526 2015-02-17 02:57:00 I think a hard drive is one of the things I wouldn't be buying online here or overseas, damage in transit is a very real risk I would have thought. getting a replacement could be really tricky and long winded. If you go ahead with it, just buy each drive seperatly a week or so apart to avoid GST. PPp (9511)
1394527 2015-02-17 03:38:00 I think Wainui that manly applies to clothing, shoes and the like . Tech stuff usually is GST free until the total coast of item plus postage is not more that $400. It must have been an expensive hard disk originally :-) paulw (1826)
1394528 2015-02-17 03:59:00 Well theres a couple of things that are not right here, the original comment was more expensive brought in NZ $430 "from 2 NZ suppliers" Key word there, Suppliers --- if they are wholesalers which they would being suppliers then really you don't pay GST because you claim that back as a business expense, as wholesalers don't sell to the general public.
Take the exchange rate and the USA (at a sale price) is $340 NZ. From "Suppliers" they are close enough to that, personally I wouldn't bother with overseas shipping, possible problems with warranties etc. Getting lost or damaged in the post. Retail & online shops are a different story with their pricing.

You should have seen the box Western Digital sent the drive back to me in --- it was so securely packaged it would have had to be run over or jumped on flat to do any damage.
