1394303 2015-02-12 22:29:00 I've been reading about the Citibank Plus Visa debit card available in Australia that offers no withdrawal fees or commission rates when withdrawing cash from overseas ATM's - info here:
whirlpool.net.au

Are there any similar debit cards available in NZ? All the travel money cards I've found offer crappy exchange rates when loading money on them plus charge you for withdrawing from overseas ATM's.

1394305 2015-02-15 01:54:00 Hmmm... it's been a while since I was overseas, but as I seem to recall my Westpac Visa debit card hardly cost a bean when using it in Aus. Or maybe I wasn't sufficiently astute to realise that I was paying through my nose. Greg (193)

1394308 2015-02-17 04:03:00 Charging you to withdraw from overseas ATMs is part of what you deal with when you travel. The best way to compensate for that is to minimise how often you withdraw cash from overseas ATMs - the catch with that is that you end up having to carry larger sums of cash with you which poses more of a personal security risk.

The best way to deal with it is just to save up, go on holiday and enjoy the travel which is what I normally do.

Either way you will get hit with varying currency conversion rates so it will be a case of swings and roundabouts.

1394309 2015-02-17 07:07:00 Johcar's solution looks pretty reasonable and more importantly easy to use. Went to Aus a few years ago and had some crappy debit card that was extremely difficult to use, and seemed to charge fees for every time you blinked. Get a money belt for passports, cash, etc. keep the daily budget in a pocket with a velcro lining at the opening. Some countries are notorious for pickpockets. As Webdevguy says its part of the deal, dosen't matter what you do you will always get screwed a few cents in the dollar, that's how the banking system works! PPp (9511)
1394310 2015-02-17 09:19:00 The rates for onesmart are not all that good. Why not just use a visa/master card? That's all I do when I go over seas now days, get a decent amount of cash out at an ATM so you're not always going back and getting charged $5 or what ever it is. Alex B (15479)

That is what we have done for our last two trips overseas. We preloaded our visa cards and used them to withdraw cash from ATMs around Europe. We also used them as credit cards for purchasing some items.
