474298 2006-07-28 06:29:00 Thinkpad 600e laptop running Win95.

I needed my Thinkpad to optionally boot from cdrom. I entered Bios and reset the bootup sequence, omitting "wake" and added "cdrom", then "floppy" then "harddisk1" and exited. (My understanding is, "wake" is for remote access across the network to my computer, which I do not need...)

Upon hitting the power button, the Thinkpad came to life, and in fact did look at cdrom first, floppy second, and the harddive last, BUT IT DIDN'T BOOT FROM ANY OF THESE DEVICES, and then it just shutdown. That is the sequence it follows now, each time I turn on the power.

Worse, it ignores my F-Key efforts to get it to reopen the Bios so I can change it. I appear, in one move of sheer genius, to be effectively locked out of my computer.

What do I need to do, to correct this situation?

Thanks for your help!

Time for desperate moves. ;)

Try starting it while holding a key down. That causes a "keyboard error" which in some POSTs gives you the option of entering the BIOS setup. (The autorepeat causes an overflow in the keyboard buffer).

If that doesn't do anything, see if you can find the "battery" (lithium button cell) backing up the BIOS settings. Remove it, and leave it overnight. Then replace the cell and try again. (That should make it ask you to set up the BIOS again, or at least start it with default settings).

I don't know where the cell is: look for removable panels on the bottom, or perhaps under the keyboard.
