474725 2006-07-30 05:33:00 I decided to wait for the AMD price drop - and it was a pretty massive change in price!

Im looking for about $1600 / $1700 system , and already have a screen. I've read some comments about AM2's, and that they are obselete. Is it true that a cost-equivalent conroe will beat AM2 by 17%?

I have heard that conroes will have additional performance benefits on windows vista.

What am I best off with - for between $350 and $500? I see for instance a AM2 4600+ for $500, and Pentium D Dual-Core 950 CPU, 3.4GHz for about the same.

What are your thoughts?

474726 2006-07-30 06:00:00 No AM2 isn't obsolete . They just came out .
They will become obsolete but then so will Conroe too .
Everything becomes obsolete .

Yes the Conroes are currently the top performing CPUs .

But just get whatever you prefer . The CPU isn't the only thing you need to consider .
If you are so keen on Windows Vista (God knows why anyone would be) then be aware most of the monitors on the market today lack the HDCP support needed for high-resolution playback of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs on your PC .

And Vista includes DirectX10 and a new Hardware Pipeline, both of which require DirectX 10-compliant hardware . And neither ATI nor Nvidia have any released yet .

474727 2006-07-30 06:27:00 From the testing I've seen the conroe's are definetly faster than the AM2 . I wouldn't say the AM2 is obsolete, you would still be getting a great cpu for your money especially with the large price drop .

As for Vista, I'd say the more grunt you've got the better . This includes a goodly amount of memory and a nice fast graphics card to run the new fancy aero desktop .

In my opinion i would stay away from the Pentium D as the AMD X2 can easily outperform them .

If your wanting to spend up to 500 on a cpu then the Core 2 Duo E6400 at 448 on pricespy is a good buy . From online testing your getting AMD FX62 performance for a lot less money . The only downside is there not available till the middle of August . Also the range of motherboards available is not as great as is available for AM2 .

Of course all this depends on what you use your pc for . If your into gaming then you'll want all the performance you can get - then I'd defintely recommend the Core 2 Duo . If your just after a nice general purpose pc you certainly won't go wrong with AM2 and you may be able to save money on a better featured motherboard at a lower price eg aNvidia Nforce5 570 based board .

Personally, I'm building a new conroe system after being a AMD user for many years . I want to get the most performance I can for my money .

474728 2006-07-30 12:00:00 To run "Windows Vista as its ment to be",then you will have to have everything Windows Vista passed/certified etc,so everything is going to be brand new and so thats $$$$,then you also have to buy the OS as well and everything softwear and hardwear will have TPM in it as well (if it has been Vista passed and runs the way its ment to blah blah blah) and everything phones home telling MS and its partners what you have on your computer and what you are doing or trying to do and may or may not let you do it.

So I am going to stick with xp for games on one computer and Linux for the internet etc, on another computer. :)

Heck I would even use Apple Macintosh before using Vista. :D

474729 2006-07-30 12:58:00 I would wait for Vista to come out and all the hardwear to come out for it and read the reviews about them before spending so much money on the stuff, and besides next year which is not very long now, QUAD (4) CORE CPU will be coming out and ddr 3 memory as well and of course DX 10 video cards and the new motherboards and you could get that new circler platter harddrive from seagate which are very good, throw in a vista capable monitor as well and those new optical drives as well.

Wow what an upgrade!!! $$$$

474730 2006-07-31 00:08:00 Yeah I'd have to agree with mephis on this one, it would probably be better holding off on an upgrade right now. There are just too many tech. releases coming out in the near future to safely upgrade without fear of something new immediately around the corner.

Right now there's Conroe, AM2, Quad Core CPU's, AM3, DDR3 etc etc and of course Windows Vista and DX10 on the horizon.

I think the best thing for anyone to do.. especially if you're changing architecture completely is to just be patient and wait a bit longer... let the do$h earn some interest (that way the mrs won't be too upset when you get home with your new quad core, dual quad SLI rig...lol)

Times are exciting but the choices don't exatly make it easy for the average consumer.

Cheers

474731 2006-07-31 02:14:00 Vista has DX10, therefore I am extremely interested in Vista.

Choose an AMD over a Pentium D definately.

Don't aim for a 'Vista Machine' until Vista is out (as recommended by others).

Me... I think I will wait for DX10.1 before buying a new system. 10.1 is going to have some small extras that DX10 cards don't support. They will probably be very minor, but I figure that the DX10.1 graphics cards will be a lot more 'optimised' since they will be the second gen of DX10 graphics cards.
