| 474530 | 2006-07-29 05:18:00 | Hello, I may need to add Wifi onto my laptop as I may be travelling with that overseas. Using a digital camera and has been unexpectant but I plan at a later stage to get a enclosure and then a 2.5" HDD such as hyperdrive.com. Basically its a common device, does brands matter? I was thinking of a generic one such as a DSE or a Netgear brand. As for the interface, I can get PCMCIA or USB. However I only have USB 1, can that use a Wifi 802.11g card at a slower speed? I understand they say it is for USB 2. I was thinking of this method because when at home this USB device can be used on one of the PCs so it saves buying an additional Wifi device. What is the speed obtainable on USB 1? Finally, with the newer one roaming around the corner 802.11n would that be substantially faster? I understand it does 200Mbit to 540Mbit. While the 802.11g does 20Mbit to 54Mbit. TIA :) |

| 474532 | 2006-07-29 06:14:00 | anyway theres no available connections in nz anyway which exceed 12mb .....so even on usb 1 you wont notice any lack of performance...and actually usb1 is 11mb......imagine for example if you are on a 3.5mb adsl connection ....your 11mb usb wifi is not going to be any kind of bottleneck is it ? | drcspy (146) | ||
| 474533 | 2006-07-29 06:55:00 | Thanks. For this trip I would be in Europe for travel for a few weeks. Using the free hotspots (where available) and such as at the big international airports. Does brands differ much? We don't have broadband. I am thinking of using Wifi as a replacement over wired networks so each time we don't need to physically take the laptop next to the PC and do a crossover cable. Such as transferring files over to the PC to burn a DVD is probably the biggest job, other jobs are like quite simple. Thanks again. |
