474606 2006-07-30 22:40:00 You say you can ping your dns server. By number or name?

If you can ping an external site your internet/IP system is working.

ping 210.48.100.10 then www.idg.co.nz Does only the numeric one work? If so, then it is a dns problem (why it only affects the laptop is another question!!).

A wooden spoon is more powerful than a dagger.

However or wherever inserted, a wooden spoon inflicts far greater pain.

Never, ever, underestimate the power of a woman armed with a wooden spoon and just begging for a punk who feels lucky to make her day. :horrified

474608 2006-07-30 23:49:00 dear laura,

i dont really have a reason for that poll, it was just a good idea at the time, it was 2am, and i knew i gave a VERY limited scope, but i did think it interesting to see people's opinions. perhaps you could give some suggestions to fill up all 10 options? then i could post in the dicussion forum

sincerely, motorbyclist

as for the laptop, i have tried all the ipconfig stuff i know, gone through all the trouble shooters, and still think it's a problem with my network, which hasnt changed, making it a problem with the laptop, which isnt wrong. currently reinstalling windows and starting again seems a good idea.

reformatting too:
does anyone know why acer partioned the hdd in the following way?
4gb hidden recovery partition (ok)
45gb fat32 with windows on it (***, why not ntfs)
45gb fat32 with nothing on it (and this is bacause XP wont allow fat32 to exeed 50gb as i understand it)

in cmd "convert C: /ss:ntfs" and all variations thereof are all unrecognised commands, so what am i doing wrong?

Hi, the partition is probably the recovery image. You can convert the drive to ntfs - convert c: /ntfs

As for the internet issues, i was going to suggest winsock error, however as the laptop connects via neighbours router, the probably is with your ROUTER.

I would do a ipconfig /release all, then reboot and allow the lappy to get new ip address lease! You may try updating the firmware on the router

i knew that was a recovery image, and i'll try converting that way... no, still no luck

the lappy had no internet probs earlier that day though, so i doubt it's a network issue, which then begs the question "***?", it must be a network issue, but the network never changed

last night i tried ipconfig /release folowed by ipconfig /renew, but i'll try again (i'm 99% sure this isnt an ip issue, but then what could it be?).... argh... ok, still no change, that doesnt work.

474613 2006-07-31 06:47:00 Could you ping both the alpha and numeric web address? Jen (38)
474614 2006-07-31 08:11:00 now this is where my technical skill runs short.... i could ping 210.48.100.10, which i presume to be the numerical, how do i ping the 'alpha'? i could not connect to the website motorbyclist (188)
