475105 2006-08-01 03:07:00 I am experiencing a major problem with my PC...

I am using the GeForce 6600 graphic card. Last week I upgraded the graphics driver to v91.31 and when I rebooted the computer this afternoon, my wireless keyboard and mouse wouldn't work anymore. I got a regular keyboard and was cleaning the dust off of it when I think I hit the Power button on it. I saw a message about Standby mode and then the computer shut off. I cannot get it back on since.

Can a computer never come back from standby mode? I've disconnected power to see if it would get it back but that doesn't work, nor does hitting or holding the power button. The keyboard's buttons don't help either. The computer is just dead...I'm wondering if it could be the power supply but it's sure strange that it happened when entering standby mode...maybe that was hard on the PSU?

475106 2006-08-01 05:18:00 So the PC is totally dead with no fans spinning up, beeps or any other sign of life? FoxyMX (5)
475107 2006-08-01 09:18:00 I have an update . . . but still a problem . The PC appeared to be totally dead but when I turned off the power bar, and then switched it back on, I could hear it start up and then stop (what it normally does when plugging it in) . This doesn't occur when I unplug/plug in the power cable though which I find a little strange . I decided to let it sit with the power bar off for a while . After a couple hours, I turned it on and it came up! However, it's in a real bad state right now . It hardly functions . It pretty much froze up (though I still had USB mouse control) so I had to reboot manually .

It came up and I was able to restart it in Safe-Mode . I ran a virus scan and an adware scan which both came up with various minor things (a couple basic trojans and tracking cookies but nothing too scary) . When I booted back to normal mode, it's back to being real slow and I'm not able to do much at all . I'm going to have to try another manual reboot and when it comes up, I'll run a checkdisk . . .

475108 2006-08-01 18:55:00 Update...I reverted back to the previous version of the driver. I ran a checkdisk and am now running a defrag just to clean things up but the system seemed more stable after the rollback. I received a response from NVidia tech support and they told me there is a bug in Driver Version 91.31. I would try avoiding that driver as it causes some weird problems. They suggest sticking with 84.21. Jeffro81 (10883)
475109 2006-08-01 22:53:00 I was going to suggest that the graphics driver update may have been the problem but it would have been difficult to fix that when it appeared that the PC had no sign of life.

Glad you got it going again anyway. Thanks for letting us know.
