2006-07-31 10:47:00 | I am using a Compaq P2 350 as a linux gateway, but after a power failure I cannot get the PC to switch on again. I recall having a similar experience before with another older PC when the on switch just did not work (a motherboard light is on so I assume the power supply is working). I can't remember how I overcame the problem. Any ideas? | bpt2 (6653) | |
2006-07-31 11:04:00 | If the mobo doesn't have a reset like some newer models can you bridge the power on header pins to short it on? | gkar (5215) | |
2006-07-31 11:09:00 | I assume you have the case open so you can take the lead that runs from the power switch off the two pins on the motherboard. Then use a jumper or screwdriver to short the two pins you just took the lead off. This will eliminate or confirm the case power switch as the cause. Just because the motherboard light is on does not mean the PSU is not faulty either.

2006-07-31 11:20:00 | There is a row of pins labelled pwr - sw/led - hdr. Do I just bridge the first two next to pwr? | bpt2 (6653) | |
2006-07-31 11:48:00 | I swapped the harddrive into another Compaq PC of exactly the same specs and all booted up fine. Must I therefore assume that somehow the power supply just packed up after the power failure? | bpt2 (6653) | |
2006-07-31 12:31:00 | There is a row of pins labelled pwr - sw/led - hdr. Do I just bridge the first two next to pwr? You need to tell us what make and model motherboard you have. I have no idea what a Compaq P2 350 specs are at this point. You bridge across the pwr pins to turn the computer on. Did you remove the lead from the switch on the case and if so bridge those two pins? The hard drive has nothing to do with this at this point in time. You probably have other pins labelled spkr, rst etc. I can't tell from here whether you bridge in a horizontal or vertical direction either. You bridge the two pwr pins. HTH.
