474987 2006-07-31 07:04:00 Hey there :)

I was wondering if it is possible to make DSL-302G Modem to have a static IP address...

If so please post back step-by-step how to do it...
Thanks

474988 2006-07-31 08:40:00 Do you mean static assigned internal address for the machines on your network ie no dhcp from modem or a static external ie internet side?

Because if you want a static external ip it is something you will have to take up with your isp and they will probably want to extract some more blood from you

474989 2006-07-31 08:40:00 your modem can USE a static ip address but you need to be issued with that static addy by your ISP....... drcspy (146)

You dont seem to understand you HAVE to be on the ph to your isp . No router or modem will aquire a static ip unless one is allocated to you by your isp .

Otherwise you will have a dynamically assigned one which is renewed everytime you reboot your modem or whenever the lease expires thru the dns .

The dsl 302g is perfectly able to use static ip I know because I have the 302 and I ahve a static ip that I had to apply to xtra to get . If you buy a router in the hopes that it will magically produce a static ip then you will have wasted your money .

474992 2006-07-31 10:03:00 lol dude i know someone who will help me set one up for a router but not modem so :D SmB (10877)
474993 2006-07-31 10:15:00 ok you obviously got it sorted but if you could enlighten me as to how you can set up a external static ip for a router but not a modem (without your isp's knowledge?) I would be grateful for the knowledge, as when I tried to manually assign a static ip (not knowing xtras address pool that I could steal one from and not knowing how to make the dns register that address which may or may not be in use by another pc connected to telecom network at that time) I was stymied .

So I talked to telecom, they allocated me a static ip, I rebooted the dsl 302g (with its four connected internet capable pcs) and voila I had a static ip .

If however you meant internal static ips for your connected pcs then you will still be wwasting your money as the 302g is perfectly capable of that .

As a footnote can anyone actually tell me what the difference between the 302g and a router is seeing as the 302 I have is a dhcp server, NAT firewall , has allowed me to connect a fast ethernet switch to it and run up to 4 pcs on the net at one time . And also allows all said pcs to play online games at the same time, I am ignorant of the true difference and would like to know (I know jack about routers)

474994 2006-07-31 10:39:00 These learned people are quite certain it is a router:
www.wlug.org.nz

The definition of a router is fulfilled by it:

A router acts as a junction between two or more networks to transfer data packets among them. (your LAN and the Internet which is a WAN)

A router that connects clients to the Internet is called an edge router.

474995 2006-07-31 10:55:00 Thanks gf that link is pearler! It is also quite funny as I was looking on Dlinks site and they say you CANNOT hook up a switch to the 302g as it is NOT a router and that a router IS required! lol I'm glad I never looked for info before I tried setting up my network straitjacket (9698)
