475452 2006-08-02 06:15:00 For an extra $30 (compared to what motherboard i am getting at the moment) i can get an SLI motherboard. Is it better to have an SLI board with 2 low end nVidia cards (E.G. 2 ASUS Extreme N7300GS 256MB (www.qmb.co.nz) OR 2 Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce 6200 with TurboCache 128mb (www.qmb.co.nz) or a normal board with one nVidia 6600gt 256mb (www.qmb.co.nz)? because i know if i do the cards will only run at 8x PCI-E slots not one card in a 16x PCI-E slot.
In your opinion what is best?

:D PLEASE REPLY WITH YOUR REASON :D

475453 2006-08-02 07:00:00 1 card. But either get a 7300GT, 7600GT or a 7900GT. Pick one for your price. Those are the best nVidia cards around atm imo (oh no, too much acronym thingies)

Oh, but get the SLI motherboard, even if you don't use the SLI

475454 2006-08-02 07:31:00 Go for the SLI motherboard, then you have the ability to upgrade later ;)

Go for the new generation. IE the 7 series, GT, these are the better spec cards compared to those of non GT and the 6 series.

CAUTION: BEFORE buying 2 GFX cards for SLI if you do, make SURE they are SLI able, I am not too sure if the 6200 is... not all PCI-e cards are SLI able

I would be inclinded to get this (www.qmb.co.nz) if I were you, what is you budget for GFX card?

EDIT: What are you going to use this rig for? I am guessing gaming? if so, DO NOT get the 6200, go nothing below the 7600GT above otherwise you will not be able to run games, or you will have to run them on very low settings... just my :2cents:

475455 2006-08-02 07:37:00 wow. thats quite expensive! will a 6600gt run cs source/half life 2/f.e.a.r etc?
or will i HAVE to go for the 7600gt?

475456 2006-08-02 07:42:00 Indeed. The set up you are considering would not get much grunt from an sli. Better to put your money into one card and get the best you can afford.

Generally only need to seriously consider sli in a high end graphics rig for gaming or big screens at high resolution, but in these cases people would sli top end cards.

Get 1 vid card, but make it the best you can afford.

475457 2006-08-02 08:10:00 If you've got the cash get the SLI motherboard. It will probably have some extra stuff on it than the non SLI board does and you can always go SLI in the future.
Definitely go with the Geforce 7 series but I'd buy just a single card as you appear to be looking for mainstream performance and a 7600GT would fit the bill nicely. If the budget will stretch a little further the 7900GT is excellent performance value for money.

475458 2006-08-02 08:17:00 It might be expensive, but if you want decent performance, go for the new gen, decent cards, I am running a 7800GTX, and run FEAR at MAX setting, 1280x1024, and that was an $800 card at the time (Jan) I have a friend who had a 6600GT and he would struggle to run FEAR at any decent settings...

It always comes down to, do you want decent performance? I never thought I would have spent as much as I did on this machine, but I did, all because I wanted the max performance... Think about it...

What is your total budget? What are the motherboards you are considering?

475459 2006-08-02 08:20:00 i dont really have a budget its just saving up takes AGES because im only 4th form at school so i dont have time to work much :angry
i will get the sli cos i can go there in the future, and will i get a majorly noticible difference between 7600gt and 6600gt? because i cant go for 7900gt so those are my two options i think. e.g. will 6600gt run f.e.a.r on any settings? will it run games that will come out in the future for long before i need to upgrade? because i know the 7600gt will do all that for me but will the 6600gt? if not then im going for 7600gt.

f***ing computers cost so much :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

EDIT
The end of reality:
i want best performace i can get for about $300 for video card. can i get decent one for that much or will i have to go the extra $50 and get the 7600gt? thats as far as it will stretch without breaking.
motherboards = ASUS A8N-SLI SE Socket 939 nForce4 SLI (www.qmb.co.nz) OR
ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 (www.qmb.co.nz)

475460 2006-08-02 09:09:00 I have found some benchmarks thanks to a friend of mine, out of the August PC Authority...

Far Cry:1280x1024 everything at full, no AA, no AF
6600gt: 22fps, 7600gs: 25fps, 7600GT: 39fps

Call of Duty 2:1280x1024, 4xAA, 8xAF, High textures
6600gt: 13fps, 7600gs:18fps, 7600GT: 26fps

FEAR: 1280x1024 4xAA 8XAF
6600gt: 11fps, 7600GT: 13fps

This looks like a rather lage win by the 7600GT to me... except FEAR, but that is the AA and AF, which kill all cards...

475461 2006-08-02 09:54:00 wow it looks like a big improvement with the 7600gt! umm whats AA and AF? Fishy (10540)
