475424 2006-08-02 05:27:00 Our tech fitted a new MBoard to our work PC recently, all went well till the lasted Update was installed, (I saw the warning - Updates being installed while shutting down) now Im left with a Nag on startup as well as a nuisance Icon in the Quickstart bar.

So, has anyone comeup with a fix for this annoyance.

I wasnt able to install IE7 as it rekoned the PC OS wasnt legit.

PM me if you wish.

475425 2006-08-02 05:47:00 If it is a copy off another disc, you would have had to download the validation update anyway in order to access Microsoft's update site . If it's somehow a mistake I guess you go cap in hand to M$ .

There are ways around using their update site which don't require the validation install but they do cost coin .

475426 2006-08-02 05:48:00 John, could you clarify whether or not the WinXP is legal or not. If there is a chance that it is bogus then I doubt if anyone here would reply, or allowed to reply. Strommer (42)
475427 2006-08-02 05:48:00 Remove the validator update and see if that helps. pcuser42 (130)

And next time check your automatic updates before installing, deselect and hide WGA notifcations.

Problems with IE7 and using the Microsft update site can be fixed, but im not going to detail that because it would against the forum rules. Talk to M$ if you really believe your copy of windows is genuine.

475429 2006-08-02 08:16:00 Hi there

Steve L.

Yes. its a legit copy of XP, sticker on the back of the case, with it 2pt font listing the XP serial numbers. Why did the annoy the hell out of everyone with such small text?

MB was replaced after dying from internal hemorage diagnosed by our PC Tech. Hes been calling around weekly for the past month or two getting rid of the hassle, but theres a limit to his patience, thus my request for a work around or update.

Cheers............John.

475430 2006-08-02 09:01:00 That being the case. Simplest solution is to reinstall. Reactivation is no problem over the net.
Do you have image backups? Not sure if they would work in this instance, though.
As a business PC it should be standard practice to backup on a daily basis. Reinstall OS, then programmes & reinstall the data. Best leave PC updating the relavent apps (antivirus, firewall, OS) over night.

If you don't have image backup software, it can save hours. Take it from a tweaker who found out the hard way.

Why ?

Because it is Microsoft, of course !

Anyone else besides John and me have trouble reading the sticker without a magnifying glass or at least squinching up your eyes using a torch or bright lamp? And trying to distinguish between a B and an 8 . . . ??!!! :annoyed:

475433 2006-08-02 09:30:00 The Motherboard type will have been recorded along with the licence key at the time of original activation so any attempt to validate or reactivate with a different MB is doomed to fail. The only solution is to talk to a person at Microsoft, tell them the circumstances and if you can get them to believe your story they may reactivate your OS with a changed Hardware record.
If your windows is in fact genuine you should have no problems.
The Tech who changed the MB should know this and be able to deal with it, there was enough publicity about the need to reactivate following a major Hardware change when XP was first released.
