475792 2006-08-03 17:12:00 OK guys, I’ve found the Pinout for the keyboard & Mouse so it looks like I’d better check the 5v rail after a bit more sleep. B.M. (505)
475793 2006-08-03 18:05:00 I assume you would have tried this already, but just in case you haven't...
The mouse and keyboard are plugged in correctly I take it?
Have you tried bootup without the mouse (just keyboard only)?

475794 2006-08-03 21:22:00 Definitely plugged in correctly Tazz, but no, I haven’t tried booting without the mouse so I’ll give that a go and get back. B.M. (505)
475795 2006-08-04 03:28:00 It is a trap that the PS/2 sockets for mouse and keyboard are identical. Except that they are hard wired to mouse or keyboard ports, and the wrong device won't work.. ;) Graham L (2)
475796 2006-08-04 04:16:00 Well, disconnecting the mouse wasn’t the answer so I decided to check the 5v Rail .

As anticipated there was no 5v on pin 4 of either the Mouse or Keyboard socket .

Removing the Motherboard and close inspection didn’t show any sign of flashover or breaks but I just happened to notice that one USB port looked a little strange and even closer inspection revealed that the Guide/Key had been broken and all the pins were jammed in the back of the cover which of course is earthed .

Dahhhh, anybody trying to sell a “Socket A” Motherboard because I don’t like my chances of fixing this even though I’ll try ring feeding with a piece of wire . (No 8 in case of further brutality)

(Once I've cleared the shorts of course) ;)

475797 2006-08-04 05:05:00 There are often fuses on the supply pins to ports. I'm surprised that a shorted USB port would take out the PS/2 ports, too. The fuses might look like resistors , but there are different sorts. Look for component markings like "F1" near the sockets. Graham L (2)
475798 2006-08-04 10:11:00 Thanks for that Graham.

I’m a little surprised too, but I guess if somehow the short has taken out the 5v rail then that explains a hell of a lot.

Having said that, I’m still curious as to how we can get past POST & LOAD without a Keyboard and Mouse?????

(No Error messages or Advisory Beeeeeps)

Never mind, I’ll probably wake up at some ungodly time of the morning with an idea. :(

Any of you guys suffer from this problem of waking up in the middle of the night with the answer to a problem, or the best part of it? :)

475799 2006-08-04 10:36:00 Any of you guys suffer from this problem of waking up in the middle of the night with the answer to a problem, or the best part of it? :)Used to happen quite often... not so much any more. Now; its more likely to happen straight after er..hmmm :p Myth (110)
475800 2006-08-05 02:16:00 It's easy enough to pass the POST with no mouse or keyboard. I've got a number of computers without them (no monitor either). They aren't needed. :D

Some BIOSs have an option to ignore keyboard "failure" in the POST, and most don't require a mouse at all. You can use Windows without a mouse. A keyboard is sometimes handy. :D

475801 2006-08-05 02:32:00 Thanks for that Graham, I didn’t realise one could bypass the Keyboard so that explains that.

Well, I’ve ring fed the 5v rail and now have continuity between pin 20 on the motherboard power plug and pin 4 on the mouse and Keyboard sockets and Pin 1 on the USB Sockets. :)

I’m just contemplating whether I need to make an offering to the Computer Gods before powering it up. ;)

What ya recon? :D
