475280 2006-08-01 23:45:00 Hi Team

I'm in a bind! I have to evaluate a piece of equipment from the US and it will only drive a dot matrix printer. I have an old Panasonic KX-P1191 here but it has no manual and I am not having any luck getting it going.

Google doesn't turn up any manuals on line either, so I may need to borrow/beg/buy/steal either a manual or another printer.

Buying is not an issue, and my need is very urgent, so in the first instance does anybody in the Auckland area have either an applicable Panasonic manual, or a DM printer in working order with manual that they want to sell?

Cheers

Yes, but at what a price (www.pricespy.co.nz) for a few days of use.:(

I think my Panasonic could possibly be OK, but I may need a manual to get it going. I thought it might have a test print stored inside somewhere but no combinations of buttons seem to do anything. Currently searching for a driver so that I can throw a page at it..

Cheers

475283 2006-08-02 01:55:00 Hi Billy,

Not sure if this helps, but we use a KX-P1595 here and I found the manual to a KX-P1124i - wonder if that would be of any use? What sort of information are you after to get it running? I am not sure how similar this one is to yours...

475284 2006-08-02 05:59:00 Thanks Pete.

I gave the 1191 a service (the old girl had been in storage in the garage for about 8 years) then popped in a new ribbon cartridge and after some drying out and impact persuasion she wheezed back into life. The heads had been firmly parked at the left of the carriage before then and didn't want to move.

I can now print from my computer using a generic "text only" driver but I'm stumped by the function set-up procedure. I might find a driver for it then try again, but the equipment I'm testing is not a computer and will only have basic dot-matrix drivers installed anyway, so what I really need is information on setting up the printer itself off-line.

Currently it has a mind of its own about page lengths and is over-printing on some lines so there's a margin width issue as well. There's a photo of the control panel here (www.imagef1.net.nz) which may be of some use in finding a comparable model.

They should be able to help with a manual.

It sounds as if you have a dud ribbon which generally causes the overprint etc

475287 2006-08-02 22:49:00 Hi Billy,

Have you solved things yet? If not, here are a couple of things I managed to get from the manual I have here that may or may not translate over to your printer:

Test print: Press and hold LF button while turning on printer. Maybe press P.Cut button to change font while it is printing.

Driver: Any Panasonic dot matrix driver should work.

Setting page width/length: according to the manual, turn the printer offline then press the FUNCTION button – the online light might flash at this point to show it is in set mode. Now press the FF and LF buttons to navigate through the options on the left (there is no A/N display on this model so I am guessing) – this will either move left/right or up/down. Assuming it moves the LEDs up/down, move to the FORM LENGTH row (I assume the FORM LENGTH LED will be the only one lit at this point) then press SET? Now the current setting for form length could be shown by the LEDs at the top. Press FF/LF buttons to move left/right to the correct setting then press SET again to accept the setting. Repeat until all settings changed then press FUNCTION button again to save and exit to normal mode.

This is all guesswork based on what I have seen in the 1124i manual, the panel image you sent through, and my experience with printers.

Hope this helps (if not already fixed).

Pete.

475288 2006-08-03 03:21:00 Thanks Pete, that helped and I got half-reasonable print output at last, but I gave up in the end because I still couldn't stop the occasional overprint . That didn't seem to be a ribbon issue (new one fitted anyway), what happens is the head pops back and types a few characters in the middle of the line, probably instead of starting a new line .

Anyway, I hooked my old HP6L laserjet printer to the instrument port to see what would happen and I'll be damned if it didn't output a fully formatted page . This despite the manufacturer specifying a dot-matrix printer without the option .

The 6L was retired because print quality went awol and it wasn't worth fixing, but despite that fault it does just as good a job as the Panasonic DM in quality terms and lays the page out better as well .

Wish I'd tried that first, I could have saved myself few hours of mucking about! Still, I learned some more about dot-matrix printers, which could turn out to be useful if we cruise into a time-warp and suddenly revert to the stone age .

Glad I didn't toss the 6L when Mrs T got into me about leaving it lying around . I *cough* concealed it in the garage instead! :xmouth:

Cheers

475289 2006-08-03 04:02:00 Touched a few memory buttons, Billy . Waaay back I sold quite a few of those DMs - from MEC, as well . Still remember diddling with ESC commands to format pages etc!

I have an HPIID sitting on my rumpus room floor! Trying to figure how to get rid of it .
