476120 2006-08-04 22:40:00 HI,Windows XP.My 'Activity' light goes berserk at times but nothing seems to be happening.I have spent hours doing Virus checks,Spybot,CCleaner & Ad Aware. Also there is not any programs that are set to run.Is there a program that tells you what is happening in the background.rdee rdee (1809)
476121 2006-08-04 22:45:00 Does it do it when the computer is idle or at all times? It could be the Indexing service - try turning it off. FoxyMX (5)
476122 2006-08-05 00:12:00 HI Foxy MX,It can happen any time & even when not connected to the net. This morning it took off when I clicked on PCW.I turned the PC off to get control again. How do I switch off Indexing & what are the 'side effects' Thankyou rdee rdee (1809)
476123 2006-08-05 00:47:00 Indexing is where Windows maps your fies, so in theory making access quicker. the activity caused is when it checks that it's list is correct.

To turn it off, Open "My Computer" , right-click on the hard drive, Select "properties" and remove the tick from the box at the bottom of that window that mentions indexing.

The consequences are that it may slow access to files down. I have it turned off on my computer and there is no noticable difference to having it on.
