476018 2006-08-04 06:03:00 I recently aquired a second hand computer from a friend which had no soundcard in it. I put in the sound card I have been using (a creative vibra 128 [with a ct4810 chipset]), howver, with the card in, windows xp takes a lot longer to load, and wen I do get into windows, the soundcard refuses to work (even though windows detected it and installed drivers for it).Whenever I try testing directsound under dxdiag, I get an error. It is a soundcard which has been used in a previous system, also running windows xp, without any problems.
My system is as follows
An Epox ep-mvp3g-m super socket 7 mainboard with:
AMD K6-2 500MHz
192MB SDRAM
NVIDIA TNT2 M64 graphics card
Realtek fast ethernet network card
Creative Vibra 128 soundcard
Plus assorted hardrives and cd drives
(note: this is the first AMD system Ive had, all my others (which the soudcard worked fine in) were Intel based systems)

Why is it not working???

476019 2006-08-04 06:44:00 Your specs say you have only 192mb of ram. Xp requires at least 256mb of ram to run properly. I would try some more ram at least 512mb.

476020 2006-08-04 06:56:00 No you dont!!! My XP works perfectly fine with 128MB ram!! zahmad (8963)
476021 2006-08-04 07:04:00 Just because a computer works fine with a small amount of RAM doesn't mean to say you don't need much. My dad's computer is feeling the pinch with 512MB of RAM. pcuser42 (130)
476022 2006-08-04 07:16:00 it will run on 196meg ram...just slow. 128 will run....badly!

have you installed motherboard drivers?

try changing pci slots and also check your bios optoins.

Yes you do need at least 256mb RAM for XP, I don't care how many other people limp along with less.

Secondly "Windows installed the drivers"? Hopefully you downloaded the actual Vibra128 driver for XP, not let XP decide what to use.
If not, do it now.

476025 2006-08-04 19:50:00 Yeah 2 things...

1) Increase your RAM, 512MB is really the entry level for decent performance in XP.

2) Uninstall the drivers that Windows installed and relace them with Creative's version of the drivers.

cheers

Sure it was a bit slow but it did work. Personally I always encourage people to upgrade to 512MB RAM with WinXP if they have any less than that and everyone is amazed at the difference when they do.

Sherman: Have you had any luck with the suggestions so far?
