| 476827 | 2006-08-07 08:46:00 | Hi everyone I apologise if this topic has been discussed ad nauseam in these forums, but I did, I swear I did, look and searched the forums for this and had no luck. So, here it goes again. :D I have a packard bell pc with an ATI TV tuner card (I am sorry I do not know the card model number, but the pc is only 4 months old). I'd like to put the proverbial family VHS tapes into some DVD's for safe and long keeping, what do I need to do/have to enable me to do so? I have 1Gb of corsair XMS PC2400 DDR Ram, 250Gb Seagate SATA HDD, an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ and a Radeon 9550 256Mb video card, so I believe my system is adequate for the task. I have also an old VCR player with the all the appropriate RCA inputs/outputs and the PC came with Power Cinema and I have bought Ulead VideoStudio 9. My question is then: Can I use the TV card to download the VHS tapes into my HDD and then burn them onto DVD's? If yes, how do I do it? (please try to understand I am not all that geeky) And if not, what do I actually need? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. :( |

| 476829 | 2006-08-07 09:47:00 | You need a tuner with a RCA or s-video video in input.. And some tuner program so it shows a picture and lets u record whatever is plugged into the video in on the tuner. If the tuner doesnt have some kind of video input on it, you'll have to buy another tuner. And a dvd burner. |

| 476830 | 2006-08-07 21:45:00 | I tried doing this. It is extremely time consuming, frustrating and the results can be singularly lacking in quality. I gave up in the end and bought a stand-alone hard-drive DVD recorder. This makes the job very quick, very easy and gives spectacular results. It is also the easiest to operate VCR I have ever had. You can record the tapes, edit down to the nearest frame, add titles and menus, and record to DVD with no problems - the right tool for the job! | andy (473) | ||
| 476831 | 2006-08-08 09:53:00 | Thank you Stu161204 for the warm welcome :) Thanks also to Speedy Gonzalez an Andy for your helpful replies. Speedy, the TV card that came with my PC has an RCA input...still I have tried connecting the VCR, but I cannot get a picture on the Power Cinema software I am using, can you suggest a better, simpler software to use for this task? Maybe a software that can do all the tasks required for this job in a simple way? Or is it just me not grasping something in the way of connecting the VCR to the TV card? :help: Andy, the HDD dvd recorder sounds very interesting, but I wonder what would the hidden cost of procuring such hardware be, and what other uses can one make of this item in the long run, once all the tapes have been seen to? I only have a handful (5or 6 tapes) that need converting. Did you find other interesting uses for the HDD DVD writer besides converting VHS tapes to dvd? Considering I have already 2 DVD players at home, would I find a third one useful? :) |

| 476832 | 2006-08-08 10:01:00 | Umm, does the Power Cinema software have an option to switch between inputs?? Like s-video / CVBS / AV or something? If it does, switch to whatever selection turn the video on, chuck a tape in, and see if a pic comes up. Does the input on the tuner say something like s-video or CVBS on it?? |

This I do not know Speedy...I must check first and then I'll let you know for sure. What I remember though, amongst my fumblings with the whole saga, is that it only had formats, such as PAL and the likes. Could they be one of the reasons? |

PAL is the format for TV,and what NZ should be set to. If you're using the tuner side of it. And most probably the same for video. Have u got a graphics program or something? If u have can u take a snapshot of the different menus / options, and post them here (www.imagef1.net.nz) And post the links this site gives u back here. Since I dont use this program, I cant really tell u what to choose etc. |

Here it is; www.cyberlink.com Let me know what you think of it. Cheers |
