2006-08-07 02:02:00 | Our internet connection is shared on a network. I have my computer, linux server and my dad has his laptop. Im running m0n0wall on an old computer. m0n0wall doesnt only has real time logs (smoothwall does but the computer couldnt handle it). I could setup an external log server for m0n0wall, which is somethign im going to look into doing. smoothwall had such cool graphs, kept the logs for atleast a year.

2006-08-07 02:23:00 | The reason for the high uploads was that after the first 2 months i figured that if it wasnt costing me any extra, i should atleast give something back to the community. So i ended up running utorrent 24/7 capped at 200KB/200KB. Last night i downloaded the latest 2 episodes of the avatar (released on july14...) and i was downloading at abuot 100KB/s uploads capped at 50KB/s. I capped them at 25KB/s and i didnt notice any change in speed. When i capped them to 5KB/s my downloads dropped right to 20KB/s. I do however feel that over the past 6 months i have seeded enough to last most people a lifetime. When unmetered connections become avalible for cable in newzealand i will resume seeding as a hobby. I am trying to convince my dad to switch to that plan. I assume you are also with telstra, as far as i know noone else in newzealand offers anything that fast I think you are a tad out of touch with the whole data Cap issue here in NZ. There is a definite higher cost in moving capacity into and out of NZ compared to the States and Europe. I do believe the cost we pay "is" to high, however I doubt you will see true flat rate plans anytime in the near or medium future. Without talking to muchabout specific material, I will offer some general advice . 1. Don't download a cam and then the DVD rip two months later, just hold out and download the DVD rip (cams ruin the movie anyway). 2. Consider more carefully what you watch, if you only "kinda" like a TV series don't DL it, you can't spare the cap, maybe at the end of the month if you have cap to spare..... 3. You live in NZ, you are in NO position to be overly generous, nothing you can do about it, you have a data cap, its a fact jack. 4. A 20 gig cap is probably is to low, try for the 40 gig cap.

2006-08-07 02:36:00 | And it goes without saying that i shouldnt download HD videos, eh' | Mirddes (10) | |
2006-08-07 02:51:00 | lol um no. If you move to a 40 gig plan, the cost per gig is about $2.48. Each video 4.4gig so 4.4x2.28=$10.32. In other words wait a bit longer then go and rent it. Stick to the rips, its the only format that make economic sence. Don't feel to bad about how much you pay for internet, people on Xtra 10gig plans at $59 per month are paying $5.90 per gig, but they never seem to relise. There is slightly cheaper per gig internet around, but I don't advise going back to DSL unless you like pain.

2006-08-07 04:59:00 | Im glad i never had to suffer dsl, when i got cable in 2002 i was upgrading from dialup. All i need to do now is convinve my dad that he needs 40gig more than i need 40gig.

2006-08-07 05:56:00 | Just get over your obsession to download excessivley/leech, and live with a lower data cap? Thing is, as evident by the 3 screenshots, downloading wasnt my biggest problem and leeching wasnt something i ever did. I seeded alot, 3 quarters of my usage was uploads.

2006-10-04 09:34:00 | yes indeed there could be severe consequences (think a couple of years in jail or rehab). | jason_f90 (3544) | |
