476757 2006-08-07 07:29:00 im still on dial up but about to change to broadband but am not sure about what hardware i need. ive got a desktop and a laptop and the laptop is equipped with wireless capability. so do i need a wireless modem or a standard adsl modem and a wireless router? i also want to send wirelessly to the printer from the laptop (even if the desktop is turned off) and will a router let me send music etc to other devices? and if so what sort of receiver do i need at the stereo? any advice would be appreciated as i am busting a gut to get off this dial up nightmare.

cheers

476758 2006-08-07 08:48:00 Hi Syrup, I have a Linksys wireless - g router which drives 4 wired desktop pcs and my laptopon the wireless link. The desktops run winxp, linux and os9 on an imac which leaves me one spare socket for any stray pc with an ethernet card for downloading and updating.
All 4 systems talk to the internet either seperately or all at once and windows systems will talk to each other via the router, I haven't really tried talking between windows and either linux or os9, maybe I'll try moving some graphics among them, should be interesting.
I use a cable modem because I have what used to be called saturn cable tv but my son uses adsl and a similar network so it does work.

It has wireless capability, USB print server (so any computer connected to the modem/router can send jobs to the printer - as long as the modem/router is turned on) and the added benefit of supporting ADSL2+ for when Telecom releases it next year.

I don't know enough about streaming music to be of much help, sorry.

476760 2006-08-07 12:33:00 Hi and welcome to PressF1 :)

The setup I have here is a single user D-Link DSL302G (1 ethernet and USB port) modem going into a Linksys WRT54GL and this runs all PCs independantly for the net, I can communicate between PCs, and also use it as a print server (still need to set this up) but as long as the printer is ethernet, it will be fine. The Linksys is wireless.

As for sending music, the only way I can see it being done is if you have a media PC, but a normal stereo I don't think so, unless it is a top of the range with wireless (can you even get these?)

476761 2006-08-11 11:57:00 Oh oh oh, I know how you can get wireless audio... :D

I was just in the realms of sleeping and realised... I have thought of a very similar thing... wireless TV signal!!! :D

To be able to send/recieve audio, you will need an audio transmitter/reciever set (I am not sure if you can get just straight audio, but I know you can get audio and video...) connect the transmitter to the PC's speaker output and then the reciever to the stereos input, if you have a remote control for your PC, you will even be able to change songs etc if you got a remote comtrol extender version...

This (www.jaycar.co.nz) is what I think would work. :)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I am back off to bed :D :p

476762 2006-08-11 12:20:00 If you just want to hear the PC audio elsewhere, these work just fine:

DSE USB FM Sender
www.dse.co.nz

Cheap as well. Receive it on a normal FM stereo.
