477265 2006-08-09 01:40:00 Have a computer thats connected to adsl broadband through a standard xtra Dlink 302G modem using the usb port .

It works good using the usb but I want to set it up to connect through the ethernet port so that another computer in the house can share the adsl .

But, it wont connect when trying to use the eternet port .

Have installed a new network card/drivers and in device manager theres no issues . Says device is working properly .

Have tried two different cables but still no good .
Clicking on the icons in the task bar after it has connected shows that its sending packets but recieving very few . ( I . e; 75 sent & 6 recieved . )

All the lights on the modem are on except the Status light which blinks on and off .

Have rung Telecom and they say its a problem with the computers settings but when using the other computer in the house to try and connect i get the same problem .

Anyone got any ideas?

TIA, Brian .

477266 2006-08-09 01:45:00 Did you uninstall it? You need to or it will continue to try using USB. pctek (84)
477267 2006-08-09 01:54:00 The computer has just been reformatted with a fresh install of XP home.

I tried to connect using the eternet port but in the end gave up and installed the usb drivers for the modem so that i could down load updates.

477268 2006-08-09 03:33:00 Do you get any response when trying to access the modem on 10.1.1.1? By default ethernet goes through 10.1.1.1 but USB through 10.1.1.2.

Do have a firewall running on your PC that may be blocking traffic?

477269 2006-08-09 03:52:00 Does the link light come on when the cable is connected? If not, you probably have the wrong sort of cable. You probably need a crossover.

There are two sorts of Ethernet cable: straight through and crossover. You probably need a crossover one. DSE cables have red boots to indicate crossover, but you can see by the colours of the individual wires whether they are connected to the same pins at each end.

WRONG

not for a dlink.......definitely not !!!

may i suggest your firewall may be blocking the connection

477271 2006-08-09 05:32:00 Tried it with firewalls turned off.

Went through the http:// 10.1.1.1 settings with xtra help desk. Still no joy.

The link light on the network card does come on when cable is connected. Using blue cable supplied in xtra start up pack. Plus tried a new cable that was brought for the other computer to connect as well.

When i first tried after the reformat, i used the xtra start up disk setup. When clicking on the short cut it puts on the desktop to connect it would open up the browser window with http:// 10.1.1.1 in the address bar and then a window would appear for me to type in username & password. After Typing in username & password and clicking Ok the box would appear again asking for username and password.

477272 2006-08-09 05:59:00 that box you are getting with user name and password . . . . . . . . . the 'name and password' you need to type in are 'admin' and 'admin' . . . . . . . . NOT your isp username/password etc . . . . . . . . . . otherwise

may I suggest you try it with a different browser ? . . . . say firefox . . . . . just to see what happens . . . dont clik the link on the desktop tho that'll only open up internet explorer most likely just open up firefox, or whatever other browser you try, and clik into the address bar and type in http://10 . 1 . 1 . 1 then tap enter then you'll get the login box and see if it keeps reappearing . . . . . . it's also worth perhaps plugging that modem into someone elses puter to see if you can log into it on that . . . . .

477273 2006-08-09 07:22:00 I tried it with firefox and IE.

Typed in admin/admin and checked all setting in there as well.

Also have a new Dick smiths router/modem that we brought to hook up the two computers too and that gives the same results.

Very frustrating.

477274 2006-08-09 07:45:00 Have you tried manually setting the primary and secondary dns address in tcp/ip settings?

It should normally auto detect but I have had times in the past when it would'nt and had to manually
