476958 2006-08-08 01:22:00 Using a new Dell PC, using Windows XP with massive RAM and HDD. My wife and I use different email accounts and to visually separate these I set mine up in Outlook Express and hers in Outlook.

In Outlook we cannot open any attachments (.jpeg, .mpeg .pdf or even Word.doc) The error msg is "Application not found" The icons for those attachments also appear different to the way they appear elsewhere on the same PC.

If I forward the emails to my own account (OE) or if I save the attachments and then open from another folder, everything works fine.

I promise I have searched all the options/ email settings, but I cannot find anything that will change this situation.

In addition, if my wife tries to save an email that she has not completed, it is saved in "Outbox" not in "Drafts". Can I change this ? : :help:

476959 2006-08-08 04:07:00 I don't use Outlook nor Outlook Express so am unable to assist with your problem but I would like to recommend that you switch to Eudora for your email client. With Eudora all attachments are saved to their own folder but can still be opened or viewed from within the email message.

With a little customisation you can also set Eudora up with separate email accounts for yourself and your wife so there is no need to use separate programs. There is plenty of information on Eudora's website to find out how to do this as well as information on the program's other excellent features.

Backing up the program and emails is a breeze and once you use Eudora and become familiar with it OE will appear rather sick in comparison.

476960 2006-08-08 09:42:00 OK, dealing with the last question first. There is a setting to tell Outlook where to store unfinished emails. This is probably wrong. In my Outlook 2000 (YMMV), Tools/Options/Email Options/ Advanced Email Options. At top see 'unsent' folder choice.

The other file opening problems I hazard are a problem in your File Type settings. Have a look at Ctrl Panel/Folder Options/File Types. Find the problem extensions and look at what is set to open them. Click on Open and then Edit. What do you see there? If the application is OK, is the "Use DDE" box checked? If not, check it. Let's know what you find.

476961 2006-08-08 09:53:00 If SP2 is installed it was made to block attachments.

Go to tools/options/security tab in Outlook Express, and untick the 2nd option, do not allow attachments.

I would be careful with opening attachments, without saving and scanning them first.

Is Word/Adobe reader (or a program that can read PDF files), installed?

On the PC thats saying Application not found.
