477776 2006-08-11 07:57:00 I read a tutorial a week or two ago explaining on how to tell a hdd is dead, and how to go about fixing it yourself.

Anyone else read that? It was new, because it had just appeared on one of my rss feeds. No idea what one it was, and I can't find it.

Hopefully someone else here saw it too.

How To Tell
Your PC won't boot, it says O/S Not Found or similar.
The BIOS doesn't see it.
It makes nasty noises.

How To Fix It
You can't.

I've never got this to work, as A) the firmware didn't match B) It wasn't the board C) You just can't find the right model (even in a pool of many, many machines). In such cases it might be worth a go but the end result has always been the same - you can pay the many $$$ if you like for the pros - now this time have a backup scheme...

477780 2006-08-11 10:45:00 It was my cousins hdd that died, with all their photos of their round the world trip. Of course, who needs to back up?

They took it to one pc guy, and they said they couldn't fix it. I told him to go to other pc guys in the mean time.

I think they would be willing to pay many $$ to get the photos back. What pros do you recommend?

The article I read before told you about a few things to look for so that you could tell if your hdd was truly stuffed beyond recovery.

477781 2006-08-11 10:58:00 Ok, www.datarecovery.co.nz was going to charge $500. They aren't sure if they are worth that much. mejobloggs (264)

Yep definately the way to tell if it is broken however they can be fixed. I know of two ways.

1. Take drive out and send to someone who recovers data from dead drives (as long as the disk itself is intact) and get charged two arms, two legs and be in debt for life after that and move to #2

2. Buy new drive, restore from backup made last week and fire up. If you recovered data from #1 then restore from that if possible.

Thats not fixed. Thats retrieving your data.
They are not user-fixable.

477784 2006-08-11 23:45:00 Oops, sorry pctek. Data recovery is what my cousin wants. But yeah, when he rang up, he just said 'can you fix it', so I had that stuck in my head. mejobloggs (264)

Its fixed the computer and thats all that matters in the end. Call it what you like but fixed is fixed and the computer would still be running.
Cost you less if you buy a replacement and restore from the weekly backup though.
