477758 2006-08-11 07:40:00 Gaim has a plugin for encrypting messages. You may even find it in the (X)Ubuntu repository list. I think the receivers also need to use the encryption for their messages.

It is easy enough to see packets being sent and received, but he is actually intercepting and inspecting them?

The real issue is discussing why the need to monitor your activities online with your father.

477759 2006-08-11 07:42:00 Sorry, but I doubt you will get help here.

You live with parents, you abide by their rules.

You should not be doing anything on the PC that you would want to hide from them. If you are, then the monitoring is needed. If you are not, then why worry.

477761 2006-08-11 07:54:00 Discuss this very issue with your father as suggested. One way of resolving it. :) Jen (38)
477762 2006-08-11 07:55:00 The thing is he provides covad DSL so he has a control panel thing for his covad isp service on the net and he goes on there and i guess thats where hes seing the information... but he doesnt actually like provide the internet he provides covad's service...

i have nothing to really hide but the point is every person deserves privacy.. parents or no parents.. period.

477763 2006-08-11 08:59:00 Well, if you were my kid your PC would be out in the family room where everyone can see what you do .

If you need privacy, leave home and get your own house .

If you are not old enough to do that, then you don't need that level of privacy, particularly as "you have nothing to hide" . . .

477764 2006-08-12 02:36:00 You could certainly encrypt any packets you send. Then your father couldn't read them. But you mightn't get many replies if the other end can't read them either.

Encryption is a two way thing. :D

Anyway, the NSF is reading everything. They are looking for people who might be planning to use bottles of oxygen dihydride (www.hqusareur.army.mil/htmlinks/Press_Releases/9x/98/June/980617-2.htm) to blow up airliners.

477765 2006-08-12 03:08:00 Gaim and email clients such as Thunderbird support encryption, but the other end must have encryption as well.

You can't really browse in a practical way with encrypted packets, because it has the same requirements as above: the other end must also support encryption. The only time this is done is with SSL, but that is only with secure sites such as banking, webmail etc.

You might like to try using a proxy as listed on this page: List of public proxies (www.publicproxyservers.com). This will make it appear that you are only connected to one machine, and no-one can tell which sites you are actually looking at. However, if your dad is really determined, then he can analyse the packets and find out that way, but it is a bit hard-going. Furthermore, some of these proxies can be really slow.

[edit]: Oh wait, just did a quick google and saw there are tons of SSL proxies (www.google.com) out there. So try one of those to see if they really work.
