477516 2006-08-10 00:57:00 I am working on an HP Pavilion with ME installed, here is the problem: everytime it boots and tries to load the start programmes i get a message 'error starting program, OLEAUT32.dll file cannot start, check the file to determine the problem'. I also get this message trying to start any prog.

Also when i go into control panel, my computer etc etc the browser window is empty and cannot view or browse through contents of any drives. Internet explorer opens but cannot log on to any site (pinging sites in DOS box is fine).
The same things happen in safe mode too, although i do get folder view of the C drive. I therefore cannot run any anti-virus, HiJack this or anything. I have run msconfig and stopped all processes in the startup menu, no joy.

Does anyone have any ideas i am now stuck :help:

477517 2006-08-10 01:34:00 Try this:

Boot into in safe mode
Open Windows explorer & go to the windows\system directory
Delete the file oleaut32.dll
Then go Start/Run VBRun60.exe (VB6 runtime lib)
Reboot

477518 2006-08-10 01:43:00 Even in safe mode i can only see folders and not files. Additionally no .exe files run, i get that pesky oleaut32.dll error message. grrr borax (7078)
477519 2006-08-10 05:12:00 Do a clean reinstall of Windows, first backing up anything needed. pcuser42 (130)

I got on another machine and copied the original oleaut32.dll from an ME disk onto a floppy disk. I put said floppy in affected PC and using the command window i copied the new file straight from the floppy to c:/windows/system and replaced the original, and corrupt, dll file. Success!! I haven't used DOS commands for a while which took a bit of remembering.
