477877 2006-08-12 04:16:00 umm...you cant play any games without a monitor.
I wonder if there is actually a game that does not need a monitor? It could be entirely reliant on sound... thats a cool idea eh?

477878 2006-08-12 04:33:00 My computer was $800 a year and a half ago and it can play almost any game on medium video settings and some games on high... CorbinH (37)
477879 2006-08-12 04:38:00 A decent games PC.
Well start with a CPU about $1500
Video card about the same
Ram. at least $1000

You won't get much change from your $1,000.

I have a $3,000 machine and I'd clas it as half decent.

477880 2006-08-12 06:18:00 What kind of CPU, graphic card and ram are those?
I thought spending 700 dollars in total on the three components is enough
for most games (given that all the other components in the PC are
reasonable).

Almost.
Medium.

Exactly.

477882 2006-08-12 08:08:00 I say so as well, 2.5k is more than enough to get a computer that will play any game out there at high/medium high settings

and fwiw straitjacket, my sys gets about 12.5k in 3dmark 05

My definition of a mid range games pc is what you just described...top end is anything that can play oblivion/quake 4/ghost recon advanced warfighter and those games that have such beautiful eye candy at MAX detail available ie ULTRA.....but each to their own I guess

477883 2006-08-12 23:42:00 The way I see it, is if he wants a brand new, customised performance gaming system on the cheap, all parts can be really budget except RAM, graphics and CPU.

Eg:
Case and PSU: $100
Mobo: $100
DVD: $80
Video: $800
RAM: $300
Headphones: $50
Hard drive: $120
CPU: $350

Mouse, keyboard, monitor and opsys all from previous system.
Under two grand. With a bit of compromise the price could get pretty close to a grand.

477884 2006-08-12 23:45:00 unfortunately you have forgotten a cpu greg, and for a decent gaming cpu you are looking at around 250-300.

Plus for a 1k gaming system I dont think is really wise to be putting 800 into a video card, a $300 card will do just fine, and at a stretch a $500 7900gt will play most anything at high

And yeah I agree with you about the 1K system, which is why I said "with a bit of compromise".

And what games would you play on that. Hearts?
