I have recovered data off four hard drives so far for other people. If the hard drive controller is dead then it means taking the drive apart which I am not prepared to do here.

Datarecovery do a good job but they would have to source a new controller and fit same. It is why it is expensive.

477787 2006-08-12 09:25:00 I installed a new drive & installed the operating system ect. Set the faulty drive to slave, sealed it up in a plastic bag & stuck it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Have the necessary cables hanging out the side of your comp box & with the comp switched off, connect the drive up & boot up, if you're lucky it'll load up as a slave drive & you can get some files off it. I found it's worked a couple of times & only for about 15 mins & the heat gets to it & it dies again. Its worth a go anyway
The other success I had was using knoppix, it could see the drives & access them.

It's worth having a go but there's no guarantees

477788 2006-08-12 09:46:00 Ok, thanks for the advice guys. I think we will be looking at trying to recover the data ourselves.

Grrr, I really wish I could find that original article I talked about.

I think I will try what Phil suggested, but I have an external hdd case, so I will use that.

About the freezing. I have heard that is really bad for the hdd, and you can do worse damage to your data? But then a lady at work had her hdd die, and she recovered the data by freezing it as well, so I might give it a shot.

477789 2006-08-17 22:42:00 I also read the article you are talking about but I can't find it now. Can you send me a list of your tech news rss feeds? I will compare with mine, and hunt around the matching sites. mejobloggs (264)
