477845 2006-08-11 19:49:00 Hello all,

My wife and I are having a problem with our home PC, and after unsuccesfully searching for an answer, i figured i would ask the experts.

Our PC will boot up and you can use all of the applications, programs, etc. However, when you touch any key on the keyboard, it causes the PC to freeze permanently. So when that happens we have to re-start it. The mouse works fine, but once you touch the keyboard, the mouse and everything else just freezes....

so, do you know what the heck is worng with my PC?

It runs XP, and its a Dell 4500 (i think). I just downloaded XP service pack 2 yesterday. and i'm going to try to get some virus/spyware removal off the net. Any suggestions with getting some free adware/malware/spyware and virus removal tolls for free?

Thanks so much in advance.

477846 2006-08-11 21:59:00 Ah. Bet its the malware in your PC causing the problem.
Get some programs from someone else, put them on a CD and install them onto your PC that way. Boot into safe mode and run them.

477848 2006-08-12 03:26:00 Is your keyboard a wireless one by any chance? If so check the batteries GrahamT (291)
477849 2006-08-12 06:25:00 If the keyboard does not have flat batteries, then it could be a faulty keyboard.

You can check if it is a keyboard fault by entering the BIOS setup on the PC and see if you can do things in there without a problem.

477851 2006-08-12 09:52:00 In regards to free spyware and virus software, the top three biggies should be on every computer  . These are:

1 . AVG Personal, Anti-Virus
2 . Spybot, Anti-spyware program .
3 . Ad-Aware, Anti-ad ware software .

You can download all three from Here . (http://majorgeeks . com) Make sure you immediately update after installing . Then do a full scan using each one in turn .

In addition, I would recommend the following programs:
1 . Windows Defender, Microsoft's attempt at Anti-spyware :2cents:
2 . Crap cleaner, cleans rubbish from your hard drive .
3 . Easy cleaner, general all round cleaner, Registry, Software etc .
4 . Zone Alarm, Firewall .

Just Goggle these to find download sites for these . Window Defender is available from Microsoft of course .

All the above are totally free, why wouldn't you have them!!

pctek! Thanks for all the suggestions. Downloaded spybot S & D and Adaware. Updated all of the Microsoft updates and got rid of all the spyware, and suddenly the thing works.

Sweet!

Thanks again for your replies.

477853 2006-08-14 21:26:00 I've seen malware do some weird things. Stop printers from working too. I always do a scan first before even looking at the "problems", quite often clearing out the crap fixes it. pctek (84)
