478403 2006-08-14 06:24:00 Hi,

I've just recently bought a belkin wireless router and whilst installing it, it tries to access the internet but it tells me it can't.
I've tried what it says could be the problem (turning off modem for 40mins etc.) and it still doesn't work.
But what i've noticed is, when i go back and plug my modem back into my laptop it changes my ip address and my dns server to nothing.
So i have to type it all back in.
I have tried installing it and half way through installation I checked if my ip addresses were still the same but it had done it again, so I thought if i put them in now before it tries to access the web it'll work.
But it didnt.
My cable isp is telstraclear i gave them a rung but was on hold for about an hour.
Would anyone know the problem?

Thanks,
kirk

478404 2006-08-14 06:53:00 The fixed ip address given to you by telstraclear has to be set into the router and then the router sets up a seperate local network with addresses based on it's own base ip address so that it can connect to the pcs that are either wired to it or connected via the wireless link.
Can you connect to the router from your laptop by entering it's base address into the address field of your web browser on your lap top?
Have you set up the encryption on the router to prevent someone parking outside your house and using your broadband connection?
Have you entered the password into your laptop so that you can connect.
How does your router tell you that it can't connect to the internet as you say in you posting?
I also use a telstra cable modem but I have a Linksys wireless router.

478405 2006-08-14 07:00:00 how would i set the ip address into the router?
when i install the router it tells me its re-configuring the router then restarts it.
Would it be doing it then?

478406 2006-08-14 08:10:00 What is the model number, does it have a user/setup manual, have you read it?
The usual way to access the admin settings is to connect an ether net cable from the router to a pc and type into the address bar of a web browser the ip address of the local connection, but I only know how it's done for a linksys wireless router so some where in the user manual it will tell you how to do it on yours.
If you are able to connect to f1 are you still using dialup or are you connecting without the router?
Telstra cable broadband is not available in many places so maybe we live close to each other, send me a Private Message and we can maybe talk on the phone.

478407 2006-08-14 10:47:00 well i've finally got the network setup and running, didnt find out what the problem was though...
I just tried installing it again and it worked.
But there is one problem...
At the moment anyone within range can get free broadband.
The wireless network adaptor disc has a utility for connecting up to network (which windows does just fine). But it also sets up encrypted profiles. I've set them up but it hasn't sent anything to the router.
Im on my laptop now and it can find and connect to the network just fine but its just not password protected.
Is there any programs i could use to password protect my network?

478408 2006-08-14 11:03:00 I take it the router isnt an access point, or supports WPA / WPA2 etc??

If u have XP SP2 did u configure it thru SP2, or did a program or something come with the router??

Whatever came with the router should let u encrypt the data etc.

With some kind of key. Which is what is needed.

478409 2006-08-15 00:10:00 I have one of these belkin wireless routers also and it definitly comes with the ability to setup encryption via keys for better security to your network, its been ages since I did it but from memory it tells you how to do this in the manual. Nutter (10601)
478410 2006-08-15 04:34:00 its only telling me how to do it through the computer thats not connected to the router only the one connected wirelessly.
My laptop is the one connected to the router via cable.
The software its in comes with the driver for the wireless adaptor and it says i need the adaptor in my laptop to do it.

478411 2006-08-15 05:49:00 when i setup the router all it did was ask me what i should make my network name and channel, nothing about the encryptions balthazar (10985)
478412 2006-08-15 05:59:00 Can you Log into the Router using the address http://128.0.0.1 I think it is. When you input that you can change a whole bunch of things and then set the IP to a certin ip that your ISP give you. I think thats how you do it. It will probley ask you for a user name and password which will probley be Admin and Password. If you can do that Then post furthur hope this helps. Al-Hassan (10986)
