478067 2006-08-13 00:42:00 I am running Win2K pro, Mozilla firefox and pegasus email over a 56k modem.

Since about mid June 06 I have experienced a lot of difficulty connecting to Paradise. Once connected I have had slow download speeds, a few disconnects and periods of 10 to 60 seconds of no activity, like I'm being locked out, usually causing a timeout.
These problems occur on web browsing, email and news groups.
Closing or stopping my browser and then restarting the download gets around this condition, stopping Pegasus and re-start gets the email OK..

If I disconnect and re-connect I sometimes get a better connection.
Telecom have been and tested the phone line and report that it is clean and running at 48k between me and the exchange which is 2.4 kilos distant.
A neibourgh also complains of the same problems with Paradise.

Contacting the help desk in neigh impossible usually with at least a 30 min wait. The one (and only) time that I have sucessfully got help I was told to slow my modem speed down to 28K ! :-(

Does any one have an idea what could be wrong and how to fix it.
I don't really want to change ISP due to all the inconveinence of changing my email address.

Is this a ploy to encourage users to go to broadband do you think.

Your views would be very welcome.

Phil

PS. I have a old spare 28k modem. using this I get all the same problems.

478068 2006-08-13 03:34:00 Their d/up speed has been variable, from crap to OK, since their server melt-down a couple of weeks ago. Before that it was fine. True to form Paradise probably wouldn't admit to that, nor are they likely to they care.

PS: you could try running TCPOptimizer (www.speedguide.net)

I really hate that when helpdesks tell you that. What a cop-out. They tell you that because while it may initially connect at a fast speed it will renegotiate if the line has problems and drop down, so they figure you may as well start off slow.

It could also be interference - are you urban or rural?
Electric fences, radio masts, high tension power lines etc can affect it.

478070 2006-08-13 05:27:00 Rural, but like I said, we are only 2.4 kilometers from the exchange.
Tcom assures us that we have a clean line running at 48k.
There are no electric fences or other interference.
Our neibourgh 4K on the other side of the exchange is also getting
__exactly__ the same problems !

Have just tried TCPoptimiser as suggested in above reply but doesn't seem to make any differenc, but then, I'm not sure I know what I'm doing with it really :-)
Cheers,

478071 2006-08-13 10:41:00 Dial up has turned to custard throughout. I and a few others suspect Telecom are trying to get the broadband numbers up. mikebartnz (21)
