478029 2006-08-12 23:49:00 Alright I just started having this problem last night when I tried to install one of my games onto it.
I have around 7gb of space left on it I dunno if thats the problem or what. But what it does is it starts making these strange noises and will either show that nothing is in the HD when I try and click on its drive icon or it just wont work.
The way I get it to work again is I unplug it from the computer and hook it back up. But it did it again earlier today when I was using a program out of it and started making the noises again.

My question is should I be worried of losing all of my data on that Hard-Drive, is it about ready to crap out on me?
I have quite a few programs on it, around all of my comp games and all of my music.
Am I using it improperly? Do I have a virus in it?
I wish I could tell you the name of the HD brand but unfortunately it doesnt really say much it just has an X on the top of it.

478030 2006-08-13 00:07:00 Without knowing what noise it is, I would say you should really look at backing up everything from the drive. The noise could be fatal, or it may just be thrashing (www.webopedia.com) (do you have your swap/page file on this harddrive?).

But yeah, back it all up, its more likely the harddrive is on its way out

478031 2006-08-13 00:40:00 There's a few sites that provide audio samples and analyses of hard drive noises.

Try this one (www.hitachigst.com) by Hitachi.

478032 2006-08-13 06:03:00 If you can afford to lose everything on the drive just keep using it. Otherwise I would be copying files onto another drive quick smart. If it always stops working while you are using a particular program it is likely the disk is on borrowed time. Eyeore (10957)
478033 2006-08-13 06:29:00 DEFINITELY Back up your drive - no matter what. My HDD died on me last week.... so I learnt the importance of backing up.

Back up drive, run chkdsk to see if there's any corrupted sectors.
Go to device manager to find our the make and model of your HDD. Then go to the manufacturer's website to download the diagnostic tool for your HDD.

Good luck.

478034 2006-08-14 18:37:00 Alright I attempted to get my stuff onto my C: drive, it was like the sinking of the Titanic, all important programs first!
Unfortunately I was working on getting this big 12gb folder out and it had a problem with one file and it eventually started making the noise again, I unplugged it and plugged it back in...
It wont show up in My Computer anymore it just keeps making the skipping noise...
Is there ANYWAY that you guys know of that I can somehow tap into that drive one last time to get all my stuff out?
I'm dying here!

478035 2006-08-14 19:02:00 if it's an ide drive within an enclosure remove the drive from that enclosure and slave it to an internal ide connector.......that if it works will show that the problem is the usb connection however when a drive starts making clikin noises or any other 'strange' noises it maybe stuffed......if you can get it to run on an internal ide cable it'll be worth running a manufacturers diagnostic program on it....just goto the makers site you'll find one ..... drcspy (146)
