478015 2006-08-12 21:23:00 Hi, just got connected with the basic free giveaway modem router from Xtra. Quite far from the exchange, approximately 5.8 km so I realise that speeds will never be that great. On the 2Mbps down plan and 128 up.

What I am getting, by performing various online speed tests is
500-600 kbps down
128 kbps up

Is that reasonable for the distance? I think so. But I wonder if I could improve the speeds by better hardware..... I am considering splitting the line as soon as it comes into the house, and placing the ADLS router at that point, and running network cable from that point.

Someone also suggested that there may be improvement by using a more expensive (better) ADSL router. Has anyone experienced speed imcreases?

Cheers
Justin

478016 2006-08-12 21:35:00 Is the modem / router connected using USB? If so, that maybe the prob .

If it can be connected using ethernet, I would use that .

USB is crap for ADSL modems .

Yep you sure can. But not your hardware. The hardware in the Exchange.

I am 400m from mine and get the same as you. Before when I was on my original 2Mbps, thats exactly what I got, since the increase to 3.5 it all went downhill.

It probably is reasonable . At almost 6km you probably won't have a line speed much higher than 800k and you lose some due to transmission overheads . Your modem may have a diagnostic that shows the actual speed connected at so you can see the difference between that and the achieved speed .
Pctek's case is different because she is on the maximum line speed possible for her plan but the exchange backhaul is constipated .

Haha.
Come on, I've posted this so many times everyone in the entire world must know all about my speed and the exchange by now.

Of course its being too close, thats whyt it was perfect initially. :yuck:

478023 2006-08-16 01:00:00 Hi

Just a quick comment - that line speed seems to vary with my 2MB connection with Xtra depending on the time of day (sometimes 500-600KBps other times 1900KBps). Can only attribute this to some sort of speed management (i.e. the more people on the slower the speed....)

478024 2006-08-17 10:41:00 You have got things like contention ratios that quietly stuff up an otherwise good connection; Xtra is not famous for good ratios (think of it as a sale where they advertise TVs for $20 for the first 20 people in the shop tomorrow). IF you can find it there are instructions somewhere in xtra for hooking up to their games server (you have to change your username.xadsl setting for this) and it will let you test your raw speed without having to run through the ISP side. If the result is good it is an ISP problem and you may need to consider the benefits of changing ISPs. Eyeore (10957)
