478691 2006-08-15 12:01:00 Hello , thanks for reading this i appreciate it. I have a friends computer at my house she asked me to fix and im confused whether the proble lies in the power supply or the hard drive. Heres what happens, when i got to the house the computer wouldnt boot, it would get to the xp boot loading screen and just turn off, the pc would still sort of be on because i could still feel the vibration, the light just turned orange rather than blue (its a hp) but it definetly wasent in hibernation or stand by i believe. So what i did is i went through the entire restore process and its funny because the computer did not shut off the entire hour of installation and when i took the last disk out and tried to boot the same thing happened again, it would just automatically shut down and the screen would go blank....I believe its either the hard drive or the power supply but now im thinking its more the hard drive only because if it was the power supply it wouldnt of stayed on for the hour of the install process. Is there any more specific indications i should look for before i order a hard drive for it, is there any tests on the equpitment? THANK YOU for taking your time to read this, i appreciate it abyss (10994)

Is it just the monitor that is turning off in that case? Is the orange light on the monitor or computer case?

478693 2006-08-15 13:43:00 the orange light is on the computer case and now i have the pc at my house using my monitor and the same thing is happening. I threw in a old 4.6 gig hard drive in it that had 98 and it still shut off during the startup process so it cant be the hard drive. Im leaning towards the power supply, if a new one dosent solve it it could be the motherboard...... is there any tests i could run to make sure its the power supply......at least i hope its returnable at the store///// thx abyss (10994)
478694 2006-08-16 02:49:00 Hello, u cant just throw another hard drive in another pc and expect it to boot up as it is configure to load certain drivers for certain hardware that makes up the pc.

If the pc is hanging at the xp load screen, it is hanging loading drivers for devices perhaps, so to rule out device issues, strip the hardware down to hd, cpu, ram and video card, try then, or wipe the hd with win 98 and try install xp to that drive to rule out hd issue on original drive.
