2006-08-15 08:03:00 | My father is using Xtras Secure Remote Email as he now connects via Xnet but wanted to keep his Xtra mail address. They said he needed to use the Secure Remote so it would be happy with connecting via Xnet. He changed his settings to pop3r.xtra.co.nz and smtpr.xtra.co.nz and it didn't work. I stepped him through, checking he had ticked use SSL and the settings were as above which he had correct, then for no reason I could see, it suddenly worked. Great! Until this morning..... Now it doesn't again. It either times out or gives a Can't connect to pop3rxxxxx etc etc error. Again. He uses Mozilla. Xtra tell him (unhelpfully) that Mozilla is the problem. Any ideas?

2006-08-15 11:52:00 | Further info: Turning off Zone Alarm and uninstalling AVG made no difference either. There are no other programs that would block it running. In Outlook Express it gives: Socket Error 10060 - note NOT 10061 0x800ccc0E This is Firewall or AV blocking ports. Well it isn't. Xtra want XP reinstalled. Which I refuse to do. He had the thing working, received some mails, replied to them, shut down PC, went to bed, got up in the morning, loaded up PC, went into email and it no longer worked. Its all Xtras fault IMHO - they should allow pop3 and smtp via another connection and then there wouldn't be this problem in the first place.

2006-08-16 00:16:00 | Hi Guys, hope this may help... "Normal" email transmits the username / password in plaintext. Theory is that using email via 3rd-party ISP's (or even your own ISP via WiFi) makes it possible for other folk to grab your personal account information. "Secure" email encrypts the information, preventing a potential security threat. As with all PC related issues, settings all need to be exactly right, and need to be confident there are no other potential sources of the fault. For example, Firewall and AV apps can easily prevent email from working, even if email settings are perfect! As an alternative... if you log on to Xtra's Webmal, the Settings tab will allow you to set up "Forwarding". Can make all incoming emails automatically zap thru to the email address at your new ISP. Regards, Martnz

I tried a Telnet too, wouldn't work . Telecom insist its his PC . SO my brother set up the email on his PC and guess what? Doesn't work on his either . Too much hassle, he can have forwarding for now and I'm working on getting him to use a domain email in future . A lot less hassle . |

2006-08-16 09:10:00 | dare I say... gmail? they also give you free pop3 I forwarded all my mail there and instead of hitting reply I hit forward back to the origional sender. That's the only way to get people to use your new address. There was a telecom tech here at work last week and he was carting around a laptop running linux and using firefox to test things. Even though xtra is microsoft it seems the tchs know what works NB them who answer the phones are not techs
