1406166 2015-08-09 03:31:00 Howdy folks,

Our 3 year old tivo series 3 case fan is starting to whine intermittently and this is getting annoying.

I've come across this website which is helpful in recommending a Fractal brand fan (altho that particular one is not available in NZ): usedmonkey.com

I'm wondering if this locally available one would be as good: Cooling Fan 50mm 12VDC 0.12A 50x50x11.5mm www.trademe.co.nz

I'm not 100% on the plug compatibility of the trade me one, here is a photo showing the innards of our tivo with the fan plug visible (mid right hand side): trademe.tmcdn.co.nz

Does anyone have any experience with swapping fans in their tivo?

Appreciate any advice, thanks!

1406167 2015-08-09 05:24:00 The trademe one should work but no way to tell if it'll be quiet like the fractal one. If the 2 pin plug is different you can cut the wires and join them to the plug of the old one. Solder and spaghetti is the best way.
relatively simply job for anyone who can use a soldering iron. I must be lucky, my TiVo is still going strong and no noises.

1406168 2015-08-09 21:27:00 The one in the bedroom was getting loud but our original one that's in the TV is fine. Easy to pull apart and replace them. It's the HDD that's a right PITA to upgrade, I tell ya! Chilling_Silence (9)

dugimodo - do you think the fractal one is worth getting? I've never heard of that brand, altho to be fair I'm not much into computers

1406170 2015-08-10 20:12:00 The one on trademe was really cheap, if they are still available I'd probably get one of those first and try it but there is no guarantee how much noise it'll make.
Small fans tend to make higher pitched sound and are more noticeable. Fractal are a fairly well known brand in cooling products and cases but I'm not personally familiar with their products either.

1406171 2015-08-10 22:15:00 When the fan got noisy on an old PSU I had that was otherwise a pretty decent one I cut the 3 pin socket off a Molex adapter cable and joined it to the 2 pin plug off the faulty fan to create an adapter. That way I could just use a standard case fan and plug it in making it easy to find a replacement. Just a thought. No Idea if 3 pin fans for that size are common. but if so you just ignore the yellow wire dugimodo (138)
1406172 2015-08-18 09:33:00 Make sure it moves at least as much air as the original one or you may get overheating problems.

Trade Me one has no specs for airflow or noise level, and looks about as half as thick as the one in your TiVo photo, so it's likely going to be louder for the same airflow.
