1396758 2015-03-18 23:42:00 I just posted in the Help forum about this as to whether it will only be an upgrade version. gary67 (56)

1396760 2015-03-19 00:52:00 "In a move aimed at turning serial pirates into honest customers and educating users on the benefits that come with legitimate software — like easy updates and access with popular software suites like Office — Microsoft has decided not to block pirates from receiving the upgrade."

Benefits? What benefits? Updates are not a benefit.
Access to Office? I think not - that's a separate pirating, uh, I mean separate purchase.

Pirates will just continue to pirate, no doubt Win10 when they get round to it too.

1396761 2015-03-19 01:28:00 In my younger days I had a tendency to run pirated copies, it can be a hassle. Going legit means you can use tech support if you have to and yes I think updates are a benefit. They often patch security holes and bugs and with pirated software you can't always apply the updates so you are potentially left vunerable to other dodgy software. Also you don't have the problem where all of a sudden your version of windows figures out it's been pirated and deactivates itself.

What this will probably encourage is a spate of windows 7 & 8 piracy so people can go legit for free when 10 comes out. As for the motivation, getting all those chinese customers onto the windows store will increase their customer base and someone is far more likely to buy something like angry birds for $5 than windows for $160. I'm actually suspicious that the windows store is a big reason for the free upgrade in the first place, lots of people will vow never to look at it or use it but the attraction of games and apps for just a few $$ is bound to attract some customers, even amongst pirates.
