1395509 2015-03-01 22:47:00 I need a better line trimmer head for my petrol weed wacker (straight shaft)
The one it came with, a bump feed, didnt work: the bump wouldnt feed and the line inside the head somehow allways got tangled
So I bought a Juey
littljuey.com

Still not that good, even with 3mm line it breaks where the line is clamped down in the head.

Any suggestions ?
Cheers

Use this with a low powered GMC Line Trimmer with the littlejuey head on,lasts for ages

1395511 2015-03-02 00:06:00 I have tried a couple of different heads, I can't find the one I have now on Bunnings website but I though that was where I got it from. Anyway it has a large plastic disk with 4 little rotating plastic bits with two holes in them that you feed a loop of line through giving 8 ends. My 28cc homelite doesn't have the grunt to handle that though so I only put two lines in giving me 4 ends and even then it's a little bit of a load for the poor little thing. Normally 1-2 pairs of lines will do my whole property, about 800 sq/m and I'm on a street corner with a lot on concrete edges I do. The bump feeder would generally need refilling once and re-feeding a few times for the same job. Still wouldn't call it fantastic but it's much easier to deal with than the bump feeder was.

I wondered if the little juey might be better but it's not one of the ones I tried. The previous one only used a single piece of line fed through and hooked into a couple of spots. It was incredibly easy to load but the line kept snapping off where it went through the metal ferrules. It's so frustrating I've even contemplated trying a bit of steel trace, but that seems a bit dangerous. I have figured out not to use the cheap nylon at least, that stuff is diabolical.

1395512 2015-03-02 01:42:00 Having used Stiihl line trimmers professionally for several years it is my suggestion that if you are finding that the line breaks off at the metal feral it is caused by letting the line get too short. Feed out line frequently and that problem goes away. You should be cutting about 75mm out from the head.Bump feeds are more trouble than they are worth. The Juey should be fine. I saw one clown try out stainless trace wire, not a good idea, he spent some time picking bits of wire out of his legs. CliveM (6007)

Not in this case the line would barely wear down at all just snap off, I think it was just a poor design. It's not a bump feeder either, it takes a single length of nylon that is held in the middle by a couple of hooks. I'd take a photo but I gave it away.

Doesn't happen with the head I use now, it'll wear down to less than an inch if you let it without breaking off.

Rotten nylon?

1395515 2015-03-02 04:04:00 Poor design, like I said. Nylon is fine, works great in the new head. dugimodo (138)
1395516 2015-03-02 05:00:00 I had the 28cc Mcculloch Silver Eagle. Thinner line would spool easily after bumping, but snapped easily, generally after the line slapping against a tree trunk or fence post. Thicker line rarely broke but tended to tangle with the spool housing or slip off the slots.
But now use sprays (weed out brand) and sometimes dig out thick weeds. Line trimming was too frequent.

Your 3mm line seems a bit thin though?

1395517 2015-03-02 05:27:00 Put on a Tanaka head it has the holes for the biggest nylon. Its what Hirepool fit to their brand new Husqvarna and Stihl weedeaters before they even go out for one hire. They come with a selection of bushes to fit every size weedeater shaft. Cost around $18 made from solid aluminum. Pretty clever invention using KISS. prefect (6291)
1395518 2015-03-02 05:47:00 Can't remember where I bought mine, it is a solid Ally one that the cable feeds through, it has a wear strip on the bottom, 4 slots for the cable and about a 25mm mounting hole. Whenu (9358)
