I haven't owned or driven one, but a very good mate of mine rented one while in Czech Republic (Skoda Superb) and was VERY impressed. They have apparently come a long way since the bad old days...

1395451 2015-03-23 01:44:00 I'm still thinking - anyone had experience of Skoda lately?Brother has the octavia . 2 liter turbo petrol. Goes good. No major hassles. Although to keep up with servicing was expensive using the dealers. 250ks on clock now. He had since 60k plod (107)
1395452 2015-03-23 01:52:00 I've only seen good stuff written about the latest Skodas, but it is always good to get personal experiences. An Octavia wagon would probably be what I would go for, if I could get one with low enough kms. Tony (4941)
1395453 2015-03-23 05:11:00 Billyt: Do the back seats fold down completely flat or are they a bit bouncy?

Dead flat and solid.

Further to Plod's comment, every time you don't use the clutch to adjust engine speed, i.e. you don't slip it during a gear change up or down, you save a little bit of plate wear, and that is why a badly worn clutch lasted another 60,000K's, and it was still more or less OK when I finally decided to get it replaced. Every time there is a rotational speed differential between the clutch plates and flywheel (such as they are these days) a little bit more of the clutch plate material disappears. It also puts a strain on the drive train, admittedly brief, but the end result is a smoother driving experience and a long-life clutch. Significant clutch slip should take place only when starting from a dead stop.

Just put on a new set of Pirelli tyres last week and couldn't believe the reduction in tyre noise over the previous brand. We drove down to Waiouru to check out the NZDF museum and not only was it much quieter, the ride was smoother as well. We'd travelled 800+km and the low fuel light finally lit up on the last stretch of the Southern Motorway back into Auckland. The climb up to the central plateau was the killer for fuel economy!

Cheers

My dad owned a Skoda hatchback some years ago. It was a little pocket rocket. I think Skoda is actually owned by Volkswagen so it gets the benefit of all the Volkswagen engineers.

Skoda did have a car competing in the WRC which was doing quite well. Have just checked and there are no Skodas competing in the current WRC.

1395455 2015-03-23 23:20:00 Company I used to work at had 2 brand new Skoda's. They are/were simply a VW with better build quality.......
.......except for the engine. For New cars they both burned though one hell of alot of oil. To the extent that one of the skoda's drivers ended
up buying 4 litre oil packs to carry around with him (as garages charged too much for oil topups)

Also, never buy a Skoda new, the resale value dropped horrendously after a year . That name still carries bad vibes from the past.

So if no-one should ever buy a new Skoda (or any brand of car, as mentioned by others), how are second-hand ones sourced?
