1395427 2015-03-03 08:30:00 Billyt: Do the back seats fold down completely flat or are they a bit bouncy? Tony (4941)
1395428 2015-03-03 20:12:00 Buying a new car doesn't make sense, too much depreciation. Also any faults usually show up in the first couple of years. Better to get a high quality second hand car rather than a cheap new one. Regarding the Yaris, my ex has one she bought in 2009. It has never missed a beat and has only had routine service and some tyres. It has a timing chain, and the starter, alternator, air-con pump and water pump are all accessible from the front. Unlike daughter's Suzuki Swift where you have remove the right drive shaft to get at the alternator and starter.

Faulty logic here IMO.

Yes, new cars depreciate fast but that is irrelevant if you keep the vehicle for a few years. I bought a Honda CRV new in 2003. Paid $42K, just traded it for $7K (book value was about $1500, so I'm expecting to have to pay tax on that one! But at least it will be offset by the GST I get back on my brand-spanking Subaru Forester XT Premium - which, again, I intend to keep for a good 8-10 years).

In new cars "any faults usually show up in the first couple of years" - so what, that's what warranties are for... I'd rather know my vehicle's history from new than buy someone else's cast-off...

Tony - I could recommend the Honda CRV model I had, although the seats don't fold fully flat, and I suspect it's a bit long in the tooth for you. It did about 11km/100L over its life and never gave me an instant's trouble. On the other hand, I test drove the new CRV, and although it had some nice features (like a blindspot camera) it didn't drive anywhere as well as the Forester (2L turbo, CVT transmission, rated to tow 1800kg, rated at 8.5km/100L, although I have already had it down to 7.2) - and the Forester has better all round visibility from the driver's seat than the new CRV...

If the Forester is any indication of the Outback (new model just launched) or the Legacy, I can heartily recommend looking at a Subaru...

The Forrester is pretty similar to the Outback; Outback has a slightly less 'SUV like' shape, and I find a slightly nicer interior than the Forrester. The Legacy is smaller, slightly lower to the ground, but the flip side to that is slightly nicer handling round town.

1395430 2015-03-03 21:20:00 If the Forester is any indication of the Outback (new model just launched) or the Legacy, I can heartily recommend looking at a Subaru...I do like the Forester. An elderly friend of mine has one which I have driven a few times and it is good. The things against it for me are: bigger engine than I think I need, too "SUV'y" (what?)

Reminding everyone that my current vehicle is an 1800cc Lancer wagon, and that is the sort of vehicle that think I want as a replacement.

1395431 2015-03-03 21:41:00 Of course Mitsi do still make Lancer and Galant wagons.... (I think they are basically the same car) dugimodo (138)
1395432 2015-03-03 22:24:00 Of course Mitsi do still make Lancer and Galant wagons.... (I think they are basically the same car)Are you sure about that? There seems to be no reference to a Lancer wagon on the Mitsubishi NZ website. Tony (4941)
1395433 2015-03-03 22:32:00 en.wikipedia.org 2007 - present also known as Galant Fortis in some markets.

So they exist, as to whether you can get one here who knows.

1395435 2015-03-03 23:15:00 You could be right, just a sedan and hatch version. Oh well. dugimodo (138)
1395436 2015-03-04 00:19:00 Re CVT, I had a Nissan with this, towed big loads with care and nary a problem. Cicero (40)
