According to one Michael Jordan, author of The Encyclopedia of Gods (Over 2,500 Deities of the World, Hardcover – July, 1993) there is no shortage of Gods, so it appears that we are spoiled for choice in terms of the current God market. It looks suspiciously like there was a committee formed to choose between two or three outstanding contenders for the post of Supreme Being, which I assume ended up in internecine warfare.

The consequential proliferation of Gods of every colour, creed, and level of bloodthirstyness, all holding differing beliefs and views of nirvana, afterlife, and how many heads their version of unbelievers were allowed to have at any one time finally brought them to heel, and they decided to reach a strategic alliance limiting the number of gods they could create and placed restrictions on their powers.

They settled the head-number argument by reference to an obscure religious formula defining the currently reigning God's view of head numbers, which has been handed down over the centuries. It was expressed as (N-1) where N=1, a calculation that finally they could all agree upon.

An exception was granted for worms, because their God arrived too late to vote, so they can grow new heads. However, not being much interested in Gods etc, worms rarely get into internecine strife and are more likely to lose their heads to birds and the occasional garden spade.
