1396660 2015-03-18 19:56:00 GST on overseas purchases has always been around for a while, its considered importing but if its under $500, its not taxed.

1396664 2015-03-19 00:15:00 They mentioned something about having the retailer collecting it. I can see places like Amazon go, "screw that, no more shipping to NZ" instead of going through all that hassle.

A lot of the DVD/Blu-ray sets I buy aren't even available here, so no local retailer is missing out on those sales.

It's already happening. I tried to purchase a fuel pump for my Suzuki from Ebay, they told me that they would not ship to New Zealand, that I should contact the manufacturers, Walbro. I eventually got one from China from ACHR who produce pumps, oxygen sensors etc for the car manufacturers. They asked me what brand I wanted, and sent me a pump & filter. The pump cost me $35 including freight. It looks good and works well. The Suzuki agents quoted me $400 and they would have to order it! This is the sort of rip off which makes people import their own.

1396665 2015-03-19 00:54:00 The prices of goods from China are insane .
A batt for my cellphone US$1 + US$5 post (2 years later the $1 batt is still going strong)
A watch for US$3 , free post to NZ
I coulndt even buy a watch batt for $4 from most local stores, let alone a complete watch . I had to buy one, just to see what a US$3 watch is like .

Consumers will soon realise that 'normal' NZ stores are just a thing of the past . Its allready happening, stores closing down all over NZ, including large retail chains .
Perhaps all we will be left with is the $2 shops (plenty of those locally) , and shops selling high end , expensive goods

Heres NZ Customs duty calc if anyone is interested . Note the $60 "transaction fee" ie a collection charge .
Goods under approx $400 they let it through with no duty/gst, for now . . . . . . . . . . . Interestingly , some goods still get a tarrif imposed on them . So much for the free trade

Good score . I bought Honda Accord distributor parts via a US seller ebay store from Long Island New York less than 1/2 price I could ever get here in NZ . Many ebay sellers have not only their stores but also their own ecommerce sites (notably chinese sellers) selling even lower than on ebay .

I do weekly shopping on ebay - now into about my 700th purchase mainly for small consumer goods . Can't beat a USB micro charger coloured 2m cable costing about a "dollar" . Or 2x 220V LED B22 bulbs for less than 5 dollars .

Thanks for the link . Bit of a worry about the so called collection charge .

NZ Retailers like k-Mart- who seem to sell chinese goods now "employ" a bank of self service check out cashiers . Gone are many of their staff in our local Manukau store . Sadly I think many NZ's will lose jobs or reduced to causal retail work .

1396668 2015-03-20 13:32:00 Sorry NZ$400 is the new amount, previous tax was 12 . 5% when I recalled it being valued around $500, but it's basically anything that does not exceed $60 in GST and Duty .

So just to warn you, $400 + GST gives you the $60 that you wouldn't be required to pay, but if there's duty on the items, it will put you over this amount so you will end up having to pay it all . Calculate your items from the customs website, it's very helpful and will let you know if your purchases would incur duty .

Free trade is kind of hype, usually only certain products will be excluded while others will still have tariffs imposed . Also the amount of paperwork just to do a free trade certificate, just costs you have to pay the certifying agents seem like another greed scheme . Some of the companies we dealt with required us to reword our invoices so that words used in our descriptions were not categorised as another item that had tariff imposed .

Cheers,

KK
