1396071 2015-03-10 09:56:00 I think someone's palm has been liberally greased! We had a huge Pine tree, native to China, next door which used to block the gutters every winter, and the roots were damaging the pipes. We had a hell of a job getting permission to fell it. In the end we got a petition from all the neighbours giving various reasons apart from damage, such as blocking the view and sunlight etc. After about 4 years we eventually got permission.

The Council have planted Kauri trees in the median strip on Glenfield Rd. In years to come the road will be ruined and the trees will suffer. I wonder if the Council will grant themselves permission to remove the trees? What sort of idiot decided to plant Kauri's as a median barrier? Personally I would save the 400 year old Kauri as it is not getting in the way of existing buildings. Maybe the Council should purchase the land and turn it into a park, or work out a way to accommodate the trees in the development.

1396072 2015-03-10 10:36:00 The developer should be cleared to fell the trees and use them for barbecue charcoal if he wants, but first he should establish trees of roughly comparable size and age elsewhere on his property. Soon as he's done that, let the chippers roll. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1396073 2015-03-10 20:48:00 The whole thing stinks.
Lets see who exactly was consulted, as required . Anyone consulted should be documented . Why are so many saying there was no consultation, as required. Did no one check this
or was it never documented ?
The landowned hired a company to organise the consent .Thats OK, but lets see just who is in that company & exactly what ties they have with council staff.

Sure trees need to be cut down, otherwise will would all be living in bush. Nearly everyone is living on land that was clear felled at some stage.
But you cant have a set of rules applied differently just because someone has deep pockets and hires a company that knows how to work the system.

1396074 2015-03-11 01:05:00 Sorry, I think if a tree is on your property, then you should be allowed to cut it down.
"Special" or not.

I can tell you from experience that uncontrolled trees cause a lot of pain, damage and hard work later if let go.

Why the fuss over one tree? Vast areas of the planet are being cleared, this guy obviously has nothing better to do - perhaps he should pop over to Indonesia or the Amazon and protest the enormous tracts of trees being felled at once instead.

1396075 2015-03-11 02:24:00 The guy up the tree is from Tasmania. The Kauri is not more than about 100 years old. If they really want to save the tree why do they not just buy the plot of Land instead of interfering with the developer who is just carrying out his perfectly acceptable and legal business. 1396076 2015-03-11 02:35:00 What the hell are the Police doing?

These protesters have been told they are trespassing and the Police should be making arrests.

Equally, the Media should be trespassed off the scene as well, as these oxygen thieves just love media coverage.

Only if planted after the building, this one was there first. But it should have been given heritage status years ago if it is so important.

1396078 2015-03-11 06:21:00 I agree with pctek if the tree is on your land you should be able to do what you want with it. When I bought my shack and land in 1989 we had the eco nazi harvey council. Couldnt even trim a tree. One good thing came from the super city if the tree isnt heritage listed you could whack the ****** down. Thats exactly what me and stilly 0320 did and now all bedrooms have full light, the vege garden now grows gang busters. Couldnt even grow a winter crop in pre harvey times Amazing what the xtra sunlight feels like now its brill.
If I was the owner of the 150 year kauri tree in titters I would just wait for everything to clam down and then race in with Mr Stihl or Mr Huskvarna.Fait accompli

They are too busy catching burglars & murderers !!!!!!
sorry , I couldnt resist, I dont believe that at all :punk

Needs to be some leyway for peacefull protest, just so people can vent a bit of steam . If the police got involved too early things would escalate & turn very nasty.
But at some stage the police will need to step in & enforce any trespass notices , just stop any access to the property & the guy will have to come down for
food and water. Protesters will eventually get bored & go home.

I have alot of big trees along the edges of my section . Im sure if I asked the council, they would make things difficult for me to remove them
So my issue is, by law Im resposible for ANY damage from my trees & branches falling onto my neighbors sections/house/cars(has allready happened) & any damage cause by roots .
If the council wont allow easy/auto permission to fell trees growing in stupid places, then surely the council should assume all future responsibility for them (yeah , right)
