| 1395772 | 2015-03-06 10:45:00 | I don't see how this is going to work, we're not living in the 80's , everything can be store in clouds, be it google drive, dropbox, even a remote server at overseas with encrypted data can be VPN in , if people wants to carry illegal information into the country, I don't think they'll be stupid to put in on a physical device. If they put illegal information into cloud services they are just as stupid... Welcome to 1984,get used to it. Exactly, and it'll only get worse unless we tell them to shove it. |

I find that simply being in a different environment, or at a differently styled keyboard can be all it takes to make me struggle. On the other hand though, if they had good reason to suspect someone of trafficing in nasty digital stuff, then surely you'd want them able to investigate that persons files (even though a bit of stealth is easy to apply, in a miriad of ways). But seriously, a sniffer dog will never sniff out a 32GB USB stick, and if people are desperate enough they can easily and safely hide one in a body cavity without the risks that a drug carrier could face. Data will find a way past even the most rigorous of examinations if people are determined enough. Like good luck finding what might be hidden in my Steam folder (not that there is anything to hide, just giving an example of a single folder with hundreds of GB of data to troll through, or to hide in). Personally, I've no concerns about very rudimentary digital file examination (almost said digital searches, which I'm definitely NOT into) ;) But if a search goes to the point of finding your stored passwords and retaining that data, then they've gone too far, plus customs, and the govt become seriously responsible for the safe storage of all that harvested data. It's just better that they don't go that far unless seriously justified, then ensure the files are securely stored and NEVER connected to a networked or wireless system. But you know govt. They'll put it on the cloud, where 100's of staff (and former staff) may have keys to access your stuff, not to mention anyone who manages to hack into the govts folders... which would be any number of foreign governments to begin with. |

Public officials are notorious for appropriating rights they are not entitled to and utilising them in ways that they are not entitled to either. The public sector's abilities in preserving confidential material entrusted to them is about on a par with their enthusiasm for actually earning their pay. Those of my parents' generation who were sent off to war were assured they were fighting to preserve our freedom. Looks like we lost that battle,a death from a thousand cuts. |

| 1395777 | 2015-03-07 23:17:00 | And its not just here . I was flying domestic from Sydney to Brisbane and had purchased a fold up fishing rod that would fit in the glove box of the average car . However, I got set upon by some obnoxious ***** in a Customs Uniform who refused to let me take it on the plane as it could be used as a weapon . I argued that if I intended to use a weapon on board, for whatever reason, a fold-up fishing rod would not be my weapon of choice . She was unrepentant and had grand visions of this geriatric beating the crew and 200 passengers to death with a fold-up fishing rod before doing aerobatics above the bridge . She should do us all a favour and become Arms Officer for ISIS . :D |
