How?

You would have to
A)Load it first
2)Ignite it then stand in front of it

Didn't know there were automatic cannons, but if so, lucky it didn't go off in traffic then.

1396034 2015-03-09 18:38:00 Hmmmm, a Firearms Instructor running around with a loaded Canon on the back of his Ute.

Beats me, maybe the reporter needed a good story.

1396036 2015-03-09 19:01:00 Think he may have appeared on Graeme Sinclairs fishing show not long ago , he had a gun like the old spud gun idea which he launched frozen fish bait from the beach

The bait was stored frozen in a chilly bin and stuck in the gun which was mounted on the beach, very effective but like any gun or device like this can be deadly

I'd like to see the cannon in question but I guess they won't want us to see that. We don't know details, perhaps he was unaware it was loaded.

I made a spud gun for surf casting years ago, it was more hassle than it was worth for fishing but a bit of fun otherwise. Dangerous though. A lot of my work mates made them around the same time and one of them decided to load one with a 5 oz sinker and fire it at an old tin shed, it went right through both sides. I understand why they now require a firearms license to use.

1396039 2015-03-09 22:45:00 I saw that show it was powered by compressed air like in the movie: No Country For Old Men, well worth watching if you haven't seen it. zqwerty (97)
1396040 2015-03-10 00:01:00 perhaps he was unaware it was loaded.

First rule of the firearms code ...

The seven rules which should NEVER be broken when handling firearms:

❶ Treat all firearms as loaded.

❷ Always point your firearm in a safe direction.

❸ Load only when ready to fire

❹ Identify your target

❺ Check your firing zone

❻ Store firearms and ammunition safely

❼ Alcohol or drugs NEVER mix with firearms as they impair judgement

I've had a FAL for around 40 years and no accidents yet. I coach High School Trapshooting teams and have been a member of both Clay Target Clubs and NZ Deerstalkers. Without knowing details it's no use guessing what happened. What really gets me is this is the second instance where an "instructor" has made a fatal error ... the other one was a Mountain Safety Instructor, who test FAL applicants, shot another hunter from 15m away ... pity he forget to read rule #4.

1396041 2015-03-10 00:33:00 Radio reports yesterday had the cannon mis-fired so he was taking it home to investigate. Whenu (9358)
1396042 2015-03-10 00:42:00 Still don't get how a cannon fires itself....don't you have to light them first? pctek (84)
