479260 2006-08-19 00:13:00 OK, I am getting a scanner and printer given to me for free by a friend.
She does not however have the software for it. The scanner is a hp (she doesnt know what model and the printer a compaq (no model number)

Can I get the software freely from the net? or am I looking at having to pay for the software?

also the different makes of the scanner and printer is that going to affect their performance by being different maker types?

TIA

479261 2006-08-19 00:19:00 Once you have the model number, you can go to the manufacturer's website and download the appropriate drivers and manual for it. If the model is very old, then sometimes it can be harder to find the driver for your OS, or occasionally the printer/scanner is not compatible with a newer OS such as XP. There is no problem running different brands of peripheral hardware. Just install the correct drivers for each. :)

Should add, if the model number is not on the front of the printer/scanner, there should be a sticker at the back or underneath with this information.

479262 2006-08-19 00:28:00 We were given an Acer flatbed scanner with USB connection, and Windows XP recognised it and provides 'twain' drivers without having to find special drivers. It works ok using the freeware graphics programs like Irfan view.

So you may find the same with the HP.

479264 2006-08-20 14:26:00 ..........also remember that XP allows you to run hardware that XP does not suppport as an earlier OPSYS too. You get an option to run as "ME" or "98" or whatever in the device drivers area for that particular device.

I have a really old modem that I play with, and XP allows me to run it under the 95 OPSYS.
