| 478944 | 2006-08-17 08:17:00 | Take for example a socket AM2 4200+ X2. 667FSB. It would take DDR2-667 Right? or even DDR2-800 underclocked? But not DDR3-533 ? I'm sure this is a stupid question, but for some reason I just can't make sense of it at the moment. |

| 478945 | 2006-08-17 08:31:00 | you are correct, that board would not support DDR3-533. The easiest way to make sense of this is to split each one up into its 'type' and 'speed', so for the examples above: DDR2-667 ; 'type'=DDR2 , 'speed'= 667 DDR3-533 ; 'type'=DDR3 , 'speed'= 533 forget the fact that both DDR2 and DDR3 are "DDR", they are as different as chalk and cheese. For socket AM2 you require RAM of the type 'DDR2', the speed is largely irrelevant as a slower speed is only going to mean a performance penalty, not a loss of functionality. Therefore when you are looking for RAM, first look at the 'type' to make sure it matches what you require, only then should you start looking at speeds. |

| 478946 | 2006-08-17 09:53:00 | my bad, I meant DDR2 (not DDR3) :blush: It was infact the speeds I was wondering about . For some reason I was getting mixed up (don't know why) The 'speed' of the ram should equal or exceed that of the FSB, for best performance . as in FSB667 / DDR667 . . . right? :stare: Maybe I need to go to bed . :waughh: |

| 478947 | 2006-08-17 10:27:00 | in that case, DDR2 533 would be fine, maybe a slight performance hit, but should still work | lagbort (5041) | ||
