479995 2006-08-22 00:21:00 I currently bought a new hp computer last week, i bought it home plugged it in and as usual got the microsoft updates to download. However i noticed that i had to install 53 updates for this pc which seems a hell of a lot considering this pc already came with sp2 installed on it already. Why is it that i need so many security updates with this xp pro when on my last pc i was running xp pro as well and it didnt need so many updates even though i kept all my updates right up to date.Im very puzzled by this amount of updates for a new pc.

Also one other question not to bright in this area of pcs, where do i look to find out if this pc is 64bit,all i know is that i have a duo core processor and that the pc runs at 2.8ghz processor and has 512meg of ram and 800mhz front side bus.

479996 2006-08-22 00:55:00 Yep, I had a laugh when I setup a Toshiba laptop. Something like 43 updates.
Service Pack 2 is quite old now. They probably didn't put the post-SP2 hotfixes into their image, where as some other companies seem to do this.

Everest (www.majorgeeks.com) will tell you if it is 64-bit....

Really? Which model is it? Didn't think they had anything with the Core Duos, especially not with only 512mb...

Core Duo's @ 2.8GHz and 800MHz dont even exist, it'll have to be a P4 or PD.

If the mobo supports 533 and 800 mhz FSB, you could use a 800 FSB CPU, and if the mobo supports hyperthreading, since u have a 2.8 CPU, (You only need a 2.4 + CPU, if the mobo and CPU are both 800 FSB).

You would be able to use HT, by enabling it in the BIOS. BUT only if u use 2000 / XP +. And its better to turn it on, before u install Windows (If u use Windows).

BUT, if the mobo only supports 533 mhz, and you wanted to make use of Hyperthreading, u would need a CPU 3.0 GHZ or over, for HT to work.
