| 480086 | 2006-08-22 09:56:00 | hi, i have just installed a new Asus dvd writer, to add to my existing one. Since install I am getting blue screen shut downs...with the IRQL error message Only happens when I use either of the drives....and not constantly either... Pressing F8 at start up tells me that: 2nd master: Asus 2nd slave: Benq is this a correct set up? I updated firmware for the Asus but didn't find any software driver to install. I havent touched the jumpers(?) in back of drives...yet...should I? Any help plz guys? :) |

| 480087 | 2006-08-22 10:05:00 | Whats the ASUS and Benq on? Are both on secondary IDE? I would check the jumpers, and make sure one is on Master (on MA) and the other is jumpered as slave (on SL). And then go into the BIOS and put secondary IDE Master / Slave on AUTO and make sure the BIOS detects both of them. And I wouldnt put either of them on the same IDE connector as a hard drive. The IDE cable you're using for these, is one end blue? If it is, is the blue end connected to the mobo? Also make sure the stripe on this cable is connected to pin one on the mobo and to pin one on the DVD burner. |

I've learnt other pc stuff by reading or trying, but haven't had much to do with ide... so....I've checked thru Device manager IDE/ATA/atapi and both are listed under Secondary Channel, with asus as master. Does checking the jumpers mean to arrange the plastic bit covering a pair of the 5 pin pairs? I couldn't see any markings on the back of the drive saying anything. The asus has 3 pairs of pins, the Benq 5 pairs..... Thanks speedy...for next step...:-) (oh, and how do i do the bios change?) |

Also make sure the stripe on this cable is connected to pin one on the mobo and to pin one on the DVD burner. There is a blue slot available right beside where it connects to the mobo, but this isn't where the dvds connect to right now. They attach to a black one using black ends (thats how it was built for me) |

Above the pins its usually marked MA, (Master) SL, (Slave) or CS Cable Select). The BENQ may have 5 pins, 2 arent used. The other 3 pins are. |
