480878 2006-08-27 00:39:00 I'm probably a month behind the times, having been overseas for weeks and not touched my desktop PC. When I returned, Microsoft auto-updated my m/c and now I keep getting a failure message :-

"Updates were unable to be successfully installed

The following updates were not installed:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283)"

I searched this forum for clues (using 917283 for the search) without success, so I did some web searching and arrived at www.mcse.ms

Has anybody else in NZ had the problem?
Is the (complex/scary) fix at the above website the best way to make the update failure go away?
Is there a simpler way to fix the problem?
Any other comments please?

My O/S is XP Home edition

Mike S

480879 2006-08-27 01:02:00 Is Microsoft . Net framework 2 installed?

If not dont worry about it .

If there isnt an entry in add/remove programs called Microsoft . Net Framework 2, dont worry about it .

Its not part of XP . Its for more recent programs that people have done using . Net Framework 1 . 1 and 2 .

And these programs are needed for these programs to run / install .

Just go to Windowsupdate and scan then untick this update to fix the prob .

So it doesnt appear again .

480880 2006-09-06 22:30:00 They say a little knowledge is dangerous, well I have been guilty of going where angels fear to tread. I've been battling with my machine for days now, all the time convinced that I would crack the problems if I persisted - and I've just made it worse. Right now I have followed the advice at the web site previously mentioned and the fix failed.

Meantime IE6 started to pay up, giving error messages every time I opened it. Now after lots more tinkering IE won't open at all. I'm happy with Firefox which works well, but some things will open only in IE.

I tried loading IE7 Beta which does run, but I dislike it because it seems like a very cut down toolbar and appeared to lack a Help option; though it may be in some reduced form due to my tinkereing. I also noticed an odd side effect where the type in OE emails looks fuzzy plus it can't be enlarged and can't be deleted in emails I forward. So I restored to a point before my IE7 installation and that brought OE back to normal.

So I'm now desparate, clearly having compromised my system so it won't run IE6. Everything else runs OK. I even tried re-installing IE6, to no avail. I'm desparate to return to a system which runs IE6 and everything else as it was months ago with no mention of KB917283 (the number of which I now know by heart).

Any help for this self-confessed numb-skull would be deeply appreciated, and I promise to follow any instructions to the letter.

Maybe I should restore back to an earlier time (the earliest restore I can find is in June - when computer life seemed much more straightforward)

480882 2006-09-07 00:19:00 Check out this link (http:) to a very useful .NET removal tool. It worked for me on a machine that gave me continual grief after applying a .NET hotfix. Mackin_NZ (6958)
480883 2006-09-07 02:31:00 I find that a good registry cleaner can help in these situations.
I would not be a bit surprised if your System Restore refuses to function.

480884 2006-09-07 02:47:00 Which cleaner would you recommend, PENTIUM? I have RegSeeker - is that any good?

And Mackin - I regret the link you supplied makes no sense to me at all. I don't dabble in http stuff. Also I see no mention there of .NET

Thanks for your quick replies you guys.

If I do restore, eventualyy the dreaded KB917283 thing is going to come up again: then what?

480885 2006-09-07 03:19:00 I use Norton Windoctor and Registry Mechanic. Each picks up stuff the other misses. One machine recently had more than 600 Registry Mechanic errors, I am wondering if this qualifies for the Guiness book of records! It had similar problems to those you describe, but is now performing properly. PENTIUM (426)

480887 2006-09-07 04:00:00 And the funny thing is that IE6 runs perfectly when my wife logs on under her user name. Thinks, if it's the .NET Framework 2.0 (whatever that is) then maybe I can capture hers and use it????

Daft idea probably - don't really know what I'm doing
