481831 2006-09-01 04:02:00 Hi Everyone,

I do have broadband, but, just cause i feel like it, i use dialup between 11pm and 7am and should manage to do 2gb download per month (it doesnt sound like much but im not in any hurry)
The only problem is that my dialup runs at 00.2kb/s
Yes Zero point two kilobytes per second

Its only been this slow since we got broadband.

I rang telecom, but if its not an external fault it will cost us $81 so i dont want to risk it unless im sure its nothing to do with inside.

Our wiring inside is as follows:

Line Comes In -> Line off to ADSL jackpoint
................................. ->Telecom Fitted inline filter -> Line to alarm -> loops back to rest of house

I have tried both dialing up with through a filter on the ADSL line and the filtered line.

481832 2006-09-01 04:56:00 try disconecting your broadband line when using dialup.
I do this sometimes and it increases the download speed for me:2cents:

481833 2006-09-01 04:57:00 Are you paying a monthly charge for maintenance of your internal wiring? If so, I can't see that Telecom can justify any charge if there is a fault in that wiring. They might be able to, but morally ... :D

Double check all your modem settings ... and have a listen on the line with a phone, both with the modem in operation and without. Any extraneous noise is a bad thing. You shouldn't hear any noise when the ADSL is running, either.

481834 2006-09-01 05:07:00 cant hear any noise on our end, though telecom person could.... line test came up clean.
And the "Pickup phone and dial 1" trick doesnt help, its silent.

We dont pay the monthly charge (hence the $81)
Is it worth me going up into the roof and tapping into the line as it comes into the house (ie before anything else) and trying that?

The Speed difference is there, but tiny. And doing that kinda defeats the point of what im trying to do.

481837 2006-09-01 06:14:00 i seriously doubt you'd even be connecting if your dialup was THAT slow.......0.2kb.......nah....how have you measured this ? drcspy (146)

BitTorrent client.....
and bandwidthplace.com speed test.

I have tho, solved the problem. It seems it was my pcmcia modem. I plugged in an external and the speed went back to what it should be

Thanks All

So that tells me your line is slightly dodgy. External modems handle bad lines better.

Saying our line is dodgy may be an understatement.
We woke up this morning to a one way phone line.
They can hear us, we cant hear them. A fat lot of use that is.
