481537 2006-08-30 23:52:00 If I strip down an OS by removing unused apps will it make any difference to start up or operating speeds. And also is there any noticable difference say,
between a 40GB hdd and 80GB both with the same OS and apps on each.
The same question for Hdd speed. Is there a noticable difference ???

481538 2006-08-31 00:04:00 It is better to stop unused windows services, but removing unused applications may also remove unused services.

We upgrade our laptops at work from 4200 rpm to 7200 rpm regularly and there is a significant speed difference.

481539 2006-08-31 00:25:00 Maybe, especially if the applications to remove are loaded all the time (consuming some memory and processing power).
You may notice a difference after changing HDD if its writing / reading / transferring speeds are quite different to the old one, e.g. a much higher RPM, a much larger cache etc. You notice the difference when Windows / large games / large applications are being loaded.
