2006-08-30 11:08:00 Just recently I seem to have aquired a problem when viewing help files or program manuals that are in .chm format. I can open the manual or file and can browse the index or contents with no problem but when I go to 'search' and type in a word or words and click on 'list topics' I get the error message 'HTML Help executable has encountered a problem'. Looking at further info it says that hh.exe is the problem. This occurs in all programs and I tried to replace the hh.exe with another version but XP won't allow me. I can only assume its been a XP update at some stage which is corrupt but would appreciate any help or comments.

2006-08-30 11:47:00 There is preference file located here: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help named hh.dat.

Try moving that, and try opening a help file again. YOu will ned to show hidden files/folders to see the folder and don't forget to substitute YOUR USER NAME with your username.....

2006-08-30 20:44:00 Thanks for the info and I notice that when I move hh.dat away then as soon as you open a help file XP writes another. Unfortunately this didn't solve my problem and I may have to send Microsoft an email and see if they can come up with a solution mjjames (7607)

2006-08-31 02:27:00 Thanks for the webpage which gave me the info on the MS update file I needed. ie KB896358. I downloaded and ran this (after making a system restore !) and GREAT now I can type in a word and get all the topics as I used to do. Once again thanks for your help. mjjames (7607)
